Tacky AND Trendy!

Speak for yourself - I happen to like the open concept floor plan as I find it much more suited to the way I live.
As for S/S and granite, this is a personal choice and most of my clients here in central Texas prefer them.
"pop of color" may be overused, but at least you know exactly what it means.

I agree, it is personal preference, I think it is just the phrases that are overused. I like my kitchen to be seperate from my living areas in case it's messy, just as I like my dining area to be not in the living room.i think s.s. and granite will go the way of harvest gold and avacado green as a trend.who knows what is next? Thats why we love decorating shows and magazines.myself, I am leaving an open concept condo for an 1880 Victorian ..the Vixen house. She was a short sale and a true vexating vixen to buy! I love restoring each room! Thanks for the reply!

We have an open concept, kitchen within great room and I also love it (although not for everyone). It forces me to keep the kitchen area clean, and that is a good thing! Seems cooking/prepping for meals is more enjoyable starting with a clean space and the light and views are enjoyed at all times.

Trends to be rid of:
Kelly Werstler's spruce green
Laura kirar's super low cocktail tables
Any asian junk being marketed as "antiques"

Expressions to be rid of:
fresh
pop
zheuge
any expression started by Carson Kressly and subsequentially worked to death by Genevieve Gorder

Doodles, somtimes I wish life was like an old Tex Avery cartoon where we could just use a gigantic mallet or a spring loaded plank.Words like BONK or BOING come to mind.

BTW, I believe my pet peave word is spelled "jeuge".

worst phrases to me:

"WOW" (used by EVerybody on H.Hunters)

"Now we won't fight in the mornings" (also a H.Hunters fave) regarding dual sinks in the master bath

"I get the walk in closet, but he/she can have a corner!!!" (again, a gag-me phrase on H.Hunters

You made me laugh. About 20 years ago back in my corporate days I was interviewing with the head of an agency - he was describing what he wanted and I said "In other words you need someone to think outside of the box" - his mouth dropped open, he looked at me and said "You're hired!" My point is that none of these are limited to the design world.

OH MY! My brother-in-law tried to talk me into those subway tiles in my kitchen because that's what they were doing in 99% of the homes on HGTV. I said, "Um...NO! This is a kitchen...not a subway!"

Sherry, I've never liked the subway tile look either - yes, I know it's supposed to be classic and timeless, etc etc etc but it just doesn't do it for me, I think because it seems cold.
And, it's probably just my personal opinion, but by the time you see something popping up all over the HGTV shows, (except for things that have stood the test of time over the years, and I admit subway tiles are in this category) and you go and find it, it's going to be on its way out or at least done to death.
I'd rather stick with simple backgrounds and show the individual personality in color and pieces that are used in unusual ways.
About five years ago I took a client up to the Dallas Design Center where we purchased a lot of accessories for her new home - about 3 years later you started seeing "almost" the same stuff (cheaped down, of course) in BB&B, Pier One, etc.
Glad you stood your ground and put in what YOU wanted in YOUR kitchen.

I really agree on that about the subway tiles, while I like the clean lines, they are overdone so they have become trite.
for my Victorian kitchen, for 6 months I have been hoarding all the original crazed and smokey fireplace field tiles, 3 x 6" or so +/-. i intend to use complementary colors in a random pattern on my backsplash, with a local white marble countertop..and a farm sink from a salvage warehouse big enough to be a small bathtub...
ps..don't bother looking for any tiles,everyone in america,s. america and europe are piled in my corner of the kitchen. i have hoarded them all

Subway tiles, like everything else, have waxed and waned in popularity over the decades. They are a classic, fer sure, but not for every one or every style of kitchen. Subway tiles look fabulous under the right circumstances and hideous in the wrong setting.

What I find very trendy are glass mosaic tiles; I am weary of seeing them. So overdone. But, if they are unconventionally and beautifully designed and appropriate/complementary to the kitchen style, they can be wonderful.

And, if I never see another vessel sink again, plunked on top of a countertop like a salad bowl, it will be too soon.

I am not a fan of vessel sinks either. Too inconvenient and hard to clean.

AY, in my kitchen in AZ I got in on the very beginning of the mosaic glass tile trend. I painstakingly cut stained glass in various sizes (some as small as .5x.5") and put them one by one about 12" high across the width of my kitchen as a backsplash. It looked fabulous, but was the hardest job I've ever done and I swore I'd never do it again. About a year later - long after selling the house, I saw the glass mosaic tile ready to go. Sure, mine had much more personality (and went a long way to selling the house) but if I ever wanted to do glass tile again, I don't think personality outweighs convenience.

I still love the look of a vessel sink but it has to be an outstanding one - not the salad bowl type.

Love this thread and so glad to see that I am not the only one who dislikes those vessel sinks.. But, now you all have me thinking about the glass tile back splash I was going to put up in my kitchen....

I often wonder who is going to clean around those vessel sinks? Need an old toothbrush?

open concept is never going to go away and now that family time is more important than ever ,it will stay .Who wants a bunch of rooms where you are cut off and isolated ,that is what bedrooms are for .Stainless that is a preference and I have stainless in both of my houses .More anti bacterial than most other finishes .I think granite will stay because it seems to be a key word for house hunters ,they see it on tv they want it .I have solid surface .I did not want granite ,I had company drop a platter on my granite in NJ and it cracked and could not find the match so had to replace all the counter tops .When that happens it scares you .They did try fixing it but you could see the fix .Pop of color the is for accessories and if you are selling I guess should be that way .But then I have seen some of the afters on house hunters and a lot of them really did pop .My tastes are not everyones but younger people seem to want everything they see on TV

Over accessorizing.You look like a hoarder.

A lot of us. Open concept is just a cheaper way of construction for contractors. People need "rooms" anyway, that is why you have dining room setups near kitchens and living room setups on the other side of dining room setups.

You need walls to place furniture (desks, armoires, secretaries, book cases) against.

Most of all you need walls to hang things from.

Who wants to see a kitchen when they walk in a front door?

Of course stainless and granite will go out of fashion and in fact are doing so already.

Personally I think it is nice to have one large room for parties or large gatherings, but such a room can be encompassed in a non open concept house.

About the closet comments on HGTV, being not always a very nice person I usually think. . . "if you have so many clothes, why ever did you choose to wear that?"
