Gabby, you didn't say what your style is - if it's contemporary you could do a gray sleek line sofa...maybe with some accent colors in a throw or pillows or a gigantic abstract behind the sofa that would marry all the colors together? If you're more into the poofier leather, there are some creams out there that are nice, and if cared for will withstand even kids. I do agree with you that a black sofa would be too much and the traditional brown or mahogany wouldn't go as well with the black. Good luck - let us know what you decide to do.

Let's look at this another way: if the only black pieces you have are the tables and the piano, a dark espresso leather sofa would work.

Here's how: if the sofa is not enormous or out of scale to the size of the room. You could limit the espresso leather to a love seat size and put in additional seating in contrasting fabrics, for instance.

If you add color on the floors with area rugs, on your walls and in accessories and walls, one dark espresso sofa will not overwhelm the room.
Here's a sofa from Pottery Barn that is classic, contemporary and in a color that would work and in a style that would probably complement your other furnishings.

What is the desired focal point in the room? a view? the piano? a TV? comfort? IMHO never arrange furniture facing away from a fireplace, regardless of season. if anyone expected to watch the pianist, provide swivel chairs in keeping with the home's architecture design.
IMHO the resugence of leather is overrated; quality leather is expensive, it scratches easly but wears well if cared for. black Leather sofas competing with a black piano may become buyer's remorse. if you truly want leather, buy timeless camel, or cordovan

A nice brown leather. Check out Craig's List and places like that for good deals.
