I live in a charming cape cod home, but I've run into a decorating dilemma. The master bedroom is upstairs, which means the ceiling is cut off on either side (see attachment for an example) How can I decorate this room? It's long and narrow thanks to the slanted ceilings. When you walk into the room, our four poster bed is against the back wall, and we need SOMETHING on either side of it! It's so boring. But with the slanting ceilings on either side, what can I do? HELP! The lack of design and bare walls are driving me crazy!

I also have a cape, thankfully the master doesn't have the slope ceiling but our guest room does, I painted the sloped part the same color as the wall and it made the room feel bigger, something you might want to try.

I remember seeing a bedroom like this that Sarah Richardson decorated. She had a custom built-in made for the sloped wall with a headboard in the middle of it. The headboard was pulled to the front edge of the built-in so that it was flush with the shelves on either side which also kept one from bumping their head when they sat up in bed. Here's a link to the pictures, although I'm not sure how well you can see them.

We have a cape, too and ran into the same problem in our daughter's room. I agree with Beantown2008; painting the sloped part of the ceiling the same color as the wall will make the room feel larger.

Many recommend bringing ceiling color down the sloped wall as featured in the above photo.

Perhaps there is room on sides of bed to place tables with lamps. Tables do not have to match. Lamps can be shorter to miss the sloped ceiling. The back wall can be painted a dark color, as in the photo above, to give the illusion of making the room shorter and to make the wall the focal wall.

A sofa table, trunk or other piece of furniture could be placed at the foot of the bed. Perhaps there is room for a couple chairs and a small table to make for a conversation area. If you have the traditional Cape Cod windows in alcoves, these make for great places to build in window seats with lids for extra storage.
