I have always wondered what color should go in the underside of the archway. We are (hopefully if my house sells) moving into an open floor plan house. From the entry way(very open to 2nd floor) to dining area, thru to kitchen that opens back into living area that brings you back to entry way. So needless to say the colors need to flow. The archways are rounded and don't have molding. So what color should go on the underside???

I know I will have to pick a color to start and make other rooms flow. Not planning on doing entryway any time soon (too much to paint)so it will say white for now. Leaning towards a dark green for living area, still not sure about dining and kitchen.

Hope this makes since. Thanks in advance for your answers.

I have heard that it is traditional to paint the inside of the arch the same color as the main room. Your case that would be green.

However, there is no law to that effect and the archway opening is so small that you can try a bunch of different colors. (it takes little paint and you can use left-overs from other rooms or oops paint) I think archways are nice and should be drawn attention to.. unless you have a very traditional decor. In your case, if the entry is white and living room sage green (I am guessing) the arch could be pale teal or maybe a peach.

I think if I was you I would paint it white for now and after you have been in the house awhile decide on the colors. The windows and lighting may make you decide on different colors than you are thinking now.

I've always heard that the inside of the archway should be painted the color of the dominant room, so coming from the living room to the kitchen, the living room is dominant and the inside of the archway should be painted the same color as the living room. From the kitchen to the dining room, kitchen is dominant room so paint the archway same color as kitchen.

Those are just general guidelines, and you can do whatever you personally prefer.

i have a couple of archways in my new home...i do agree...the color from the main room looks really nice...but we painted one with an accent color to make it stand out (it is where our tv components are)...i really like the way it looks and have thought of painting the arch that leads into the dining room with an accent color as well...we have been in the house for 6 mo. now and are painting slowly...our ideas change every day...
