Since I dont usually answer the phone if I dont know the caller, does HGTV leave a voice message about who is trying to contact you? Or what is HGTV's Area code so I would know to pick up or call back?
Hate to miss the opportunity of a lifetime!

Hgtv used email, snail mail, telephone and friends to search out the winner to award him/her in the past. It isn't likely a national sweepstakes venue like HGTV would "pass by" a winner in any short and inadequate manner. Integrity has huge rewards.
A message on your recorder from Scripps is certainly imho reasonable. Your neighbor's spoofing you is more likely to happen than winning the sweepstakes, at least mine is. :>)

I think I read on the blog they were to ambush the winner in the next few days.

Generally they call the person or send an email telling them they are a finalist. The winner must execute documents affirming they are not related to anyone at Scripps or the PR/contest agency. And they must agree not to tell anyone they won until the Ambush is aired. They have 5 days to do that! At the ambush the person knows they won but don't know when someone will show up for sure.

They have done that in the past, but the last several drawings have indicated one person and they do a check up on them prior to the ambush. then they have the five days.

They also have notified family members in the past. I guess we will see.
