I appreciate the opportunity to post green stuff on the Message Board. If the posts are worthy of a read, thanks. If they are not, please post right over the top of them, and coffee clutch, looking for better green standards. (signed, church lady) Big Grin

Here's to the making of algae-based fuel for our greater green. We don't have unlimited sources of water. Which should be used to make alternate fuels?

"to Common Sense"...the huge use of fresh water for alternate energy...

It takes 350 gallons of fresh water to make one gallon of algae-formed biofuel, about the same water usage as in making ethanol! That is what it is taking for our alternate energies. (I didn't know that) Eek Plus their BTU equivalent to gasoline is nearly half.
Fracking for natual gas uses water too; one assumes smaller amounts, .16 gals of water to form one gallon of gas. (Ron Muhlenkamp Funds) There is a large difference when using natural gas.
This mandated algae idea plays on the fact we can substitute salt water for precious fresh water: actually use salt water to make algae, removing the salt into huge piles in the process that requires other huge land mass/sun exposure to form algae. It's a cranium crunch.
Coffee
Black and hot. Merci. Smile

While waiting for the high week of June 21-28 when the Green Sweepstakes winner will get a call, this thought comes to me...
HGTV SWEEPSTAKES, please take note.
I am married to green. I am looking for a better relationship! I am looking at what is being jammed down our collective gizzards.
When will we as a free and bright society take time to assimilate all the green efforts that have been mandated to us?
We need some leadership here, as the Rainmaker might say.
As ChuckSteak pointed out on MB, we don't yet have any total review on these monster projects. Just because it's big, don't mean that it is is smart, I would add. HGTV, the Sweepstakes needs someone better, something better than what is being presented.

Greeners have too much obscene disregard for cost analysis, common sense in the market place, intelligent discussion. "Emma go hedt"!! It's green!
So many are obtuse. Here is a prime example of solar in our country:
We have solar photovoltaic being mounted on homes and buildings in areas where minimalistic benefits occur.
These include marine climates and northern latitudes, wooded areas and areas of high snow accumulation; high wind/dust deserts, long grid line locations.
I like to note that HGTV has installed them on every Green Home regardless of location. Could they not explain to us this unreality because we might react negatively and not intelligently to roof-solar absence?
Against costs of natl gas-powered electric costs anywhere in the country, solar is twenty times Per KwH in total lifetime cost of solar: owner capitalization cost, federal capitalization cost and credits, taxpayer cost and maintenance and storm affects/damages. They take decades to pay off their total capitalization.
It takes decades to figure out the real cost.

Differential cost to run an all-electric versus a high mileage gas vehicle: You save about $2 a day* having an electric when both cars commute 50 miles a day, based on $3.50 per gallon, and elec cost of $.16 per KwH on Level Two Tier rates.
It's a challenge to know exactly. But 20 KwH more elec usage daily for charging the elec car takes the home rate up 1.5 times.

Then consider right now the all-electric purchase cost differential between all-electric and all gas car is $10,000,

*resulting in a ten or more year period just to pay off the difference in price of the all-electric.
Often elec company rates are reduced 17% for elec car charging...the guvment pays it to the elec company (you are the guvment, right?) :>)

Reports are that at car charging stations, thoughtful users leave notes telling other car starved customers how long they will use the charger.
Let me be in that number, when the chargers come writing notes. :>)

I hope she has never heard of Whittier.
That would put you in the front row. :>)
On the green front, green is still an adjective. When or if it becomes a noun, I hope we still have an economy to back it up!!!!

One for the economy: one for the Green Home garage!
The arrival today of eight count them Tesla all-electric cars! Delivered under a taxpayer development loan of $400M +.
Tesla, the mega-pricey car known for its teething problems in its development announced today that eight new (S model) cars at about $60K with taxes, minus $7500 in fed tax credit are off the assembly line. The Roadster was listed at $100,000, and there is confusion on the news releases as to if the S model is as cheap as the 57,700 given.
Thousands of depositors for the car are waiting for their own deliveries.
The liquid-cooled battery is of lithion-ion design, needing no battery draining to recharge after its use. The battery cost is near $20,000. It weighs 990 pounds. A computer protects the drive battery from full discharge, which, if it occurs, is reported to result in a battery exchange. oi.
The battery requires cooling after use before recharging is applied. Southern climes take particular note.
It needs heating at 0 F. degrees before it can be recharged. Northern climes take particular note.
The voltage delivery of 200+ V with 85 KwH capacity is protected by high voltage connectors when certain limits are exceeded, thereby protecting the passenger and any rescue personnel in crashes such as Jaws of Life.
It is reportedly the best car for length of service per recharge: appx 160-200 miles; that is at 55 mph criteria, and oh, Tesla says it can go farther.
But that range is making car buyers take a second look.

Nay, but the tele recently showed an hour of review on the development of the car.
It's pricey, out of range of just about everyone who enters a Green Home Sweeps, one would imagine.
I liked the way cars were introduced for decades... was to "Volkswagen" them...and then move up the ladder.
This green car thing is not close to that.

Hello, NJ,
Haven't seen it yet. Lots of time to do it, of course, and am looking forward to that. HGTV deserves credit for these venues of Dream and Green. So far, so good.

Just got back from a sail along the Belgian coast where 30, 400 foot-tall wind turbines, built in 2008 and 2009 are showing off, lots of them positioned in the sea at depths of 28 meters. Haven't heard of their bragging about their successes, though.

Well it won't be of much interest to the MB but it was a recently built, 45,000 ton Cunard Line ship, a fourteen day
venture into cities in Scandinavia, Russia, Estonia and Belgium.
I don't usually dig regulated shore tours but tour leaders were first rate and personable, sharing their personal histories at the tour's end, a revelation in the former Soviet Bloc especially.
City tours were conducted by each respective city's educated, mid-aged women.
It was a 70th birthday celebration of a good-looking lady I have been married to almost fifty-one years. Since most MBers are gals, they would be happy to know that the lady says it is an exceptional time, excellent food and accomodations, excellent scenery, especially the narrows into/out of Stockholm, and first-rate on board entertainment. Choose July or August, or early September.

Tango,
The trip sounds like it was wonderful and what a neat trip to have planned for your lovely ladies birthday. My husband an I just turned 60 this month and had hoped to plan some adventure, maybe we still will. 51 years of marriage is so wonderful. Your trip was at a great time as all of HGTV's projects are in progress and soon we will have more information to check out, talk about and in my case dream about the possibilities. You would be surprised, we have a number of men who come to the message board.

Will going to go check and see if there is anything going on with the new dreamhome. I am anxious to see what all they will have to offer.

Let's see what happens to the ethanol mandate now that corn is 60% more costly than a year back.
Ethanol adds $.40 to a gallon, takes 30 gallons of water to produce, blend it into one gallon of gas.
The amount of corn used to make ethanol is nearly 40% of the total corn crop in these Uni ted Sta tes.
Ethanol, according to Consumer Reports, reduces fuel mileage 10%+, while reducing emissions 10%.
Hello Church Lady! Discuss zero sum amongst yourselves. :>)

Green Hybrid Vehicles news on 24 Sept 2012: Yoko Kubota, Reuters' News Agency:

6:12 a.m. EDT, September 24, 2012 TOKYO (Reuters) -
Toyota Motor Corp has scrapped plans for widespread sales of a new all-electric minicar, saying it had misread the market and the ability of still-emerging battery technology to meet consumer demands.

Here's something more on electric vehicles: someone with a Volt please challenge this...

To go 45 miles' commute electrically with a volt uses up 20 KwH of power. The KwH rate to charge a Volt raises the elec rates higher than normal because the additional 20 KwH of power pushes the homeowner's total monthly power usage into higher tier rates.
The elec company credits some of that excess, but the final rate per KwH is still 1.5 times higher than normal.
In the commute, one might save $.50 a day with the Volt over a 36 mpg Chevy Cruze. But one pays $10K more for the Volt and the taxpayers paid $7.5K additional for the tax credits.
Even with a two dollar a day savings, it would take 8000+ days to just pay off the Volt-Cruze price difference.

Thinking green and living green...
The charger for the Tesla electric car is built inside the car itself. The charging stations being offered for it are 240 Volt units.
Here's the Wow in the car's new charging power supply:
Tesla Motors is installing a total of six $250,000 "superchargers" along highways in California and Nevada, Arizona to fast-charge their Model S, $60,000 electric car. There are plans for more of these stations at that price.
I am impatient when cars are lined up at the costco gas station. I can't imagine driving---who knows how many miles---off your trip route, then waiting an hour for a charge (half an hour charge-ability for their more expensive, $90,000 S).
I live on Pluto. We seem to favor hybrids more than electrics.
The Fisker electric car that recently burned up on the street had a rebuilt battery.

The Whirlpool-Glazer lawsuit involving front loading clothes' washers in Ohio, (WSJ, Oct 10, '12) notes in the claim that the washer made some clothes smell moldy. 200,000 are under the class action. Are you one?
We had an older top loader that smelled moldy but the clothes never came out smelling that way.

Siemens of Germany, large solar engineering firm, announced today, Oct 22, '12 it is exiting the solar business, but keeping wind and hydro.
European investment in solar was the darling of the green movement. Did Siemens ever reach the paid-off investment goal, so it could start making a profit? One would guess, not.

Dear Trish, hello! and a tip of the Tango hat,
and a happy Fall Season! If you like something, you like something. good.

Perhaps you are just joshing about your Tesla...(Tango thinks that the elec car to which you refer is spelled, Tesla. But that shouldn't discharge the battery!!) I have to write my DH's name on the refrigerator even after five decades!!!
Supposing that a dear heart like you wouldn't ever pull the football out away from Tango's kick...please describe in your always gracious manner your amorousness toward your Tesla. Use, if you wish, the same odious sources I do including internet, WSJ, TV and Motor News. :>)
I am guessing price was no object? Love is like that!!:>) Tesla's are like that!!
Just how long does it take to charge up the Tesla? How much was the elec bill affected per month? Can you really go over 100 miles?
To charge up the 85 KwH Tesla S model drive battery would take a solar panel system of humongous panels; and of course, sun!!
(take the bus on cloudy days, Trish or trade for a hybrid. just kidding)
I like solar, and have an eight panel on my roof. I had an even more complex system in 1974 in snow country. :>)
With kind regards, and long funny ears,
shoeshine boy.

You can have the whole swamp, Ms. Judy! :>) You got to win first, Missy.
I once knew a turtle back when Joe Palooka was in the Army.
She was kind of a dish? I dunno what you would call her but she loved the Army guys.
She was from Flatbush and her friends called her, Moityl.
She loved the races, Saratoga being her home.
She would come to visit our house in Asbury Park from time to time. In the time she took to get to our house her accent was gone. Strangest thing.
She would always bet against the rabbits, and consequently had literally hoards of cash. She would tell the IRS that the reason she was carrying so much mulah was because by the time she got to 42nd Street all the stores were closed, so she had no where to spend it.
She said that the cops on the Beat would vouch for her.
Her favorite show was, The LITTLE THEATER OFF TIMES SQUARE. She sat Seventh Row Center, Seat Seven on Fridays, when the theater was empty. Dave Letterman who now does his show from there says the seat has her name inscribed on the back..."Moityl the Toityl sat on dis spot for twenty-tree years every Friday."

! Green Beans, please! Pay attention at the pump!
E10 versus E15 ethanol gas usage...

E15 isssues: Potential corrosive damage to fuel lines, gaskets and other engine components.

11:40AM EST November 30. 2012 - The AAA says the Environmental Protection Agency and gasoline retailers should halt the sale of E15, a new ethanol blend that could damage millions of vehicles and void car warranties.

AAA, which issued a warning Friday, says just 12 million of more than 240 million cars, trucks and SUVs now in use have manufacturers' approval for E15.
Flex-fuel vehicles, 2012 and newer General Motors vehicles, 2013 Fords and 2001 and later model Porsches are the exceptions, according to AAA, the nation's largest motorist group, with 53.5 million members.
BMW, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota and VW have said their warranties will not cover fuel-related claims caused by E15.
Ford, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo have said E15 use will void warranties, says Darbelnet.

Thanks for the info Tango.

A friend of mine owns three BP gas stations he does mechanical work at two of them. He told me a few years ago not to use any of the ethenol corn blend additive fuels. He said they cause engines to run hotter causing damage to essential parts, some of which you have described. I use a straight premium fuel.( I'm sure there are additives in that fuel as well but I'm not sure they are as harmful.)

When I win the "Smart Home" I will only need my "Big Wheel" bike to get around everywhere.

Ethanol/blend-for-season plus the additional butane added to gas here in SW FL is a pain in the royal neck. As a Season ends, (it's calendar, not temperature scheduled) the stuff is junky and requires an additive to get better mileage back; the ethanol has a much shorter shelf life than gas without it. I just applied a throttle body clean out and a Lucas additive on my Mazda6.
May your big wheel tires never go flat, your smart phone work nicely in your Smart Home setting there in Swamp Hollow!
Good to hear from you, Mr. Bill.
