NurseJudy, you probably read that...
Smart Home cranks up in the Spring with a sweepstakes, one not likely to have a winner's cash option like Dream Home winners have received. The 3000 sq foot Blog Home is similar to the Smart Home in that regard.
The smart in Smart Home doesn't necessarily mean smart layout, floor plans.
Smart in this case suggests a home having a portable computer pad that lists/controls essential home operations which can be controlled from anywhere there is .net service.
We have a son who sells these remote tech devices.
The home design isn't particularly sensational, esoteric; but perhaps charm fits in? I hope one out of three.
Smart also implies green, that buzz word upon which HGTV is working to expand its audience, searching for more of that type of sponsor?
They aren't cheap. Really, new municipal Building Code is making it hard to put together any kind cheap home construction.
Greeners claim that the newest codes, usually 20% higher in actual building costs, are much less expensive than that which existed five years' back. I think the green costs are getting comparative to standard construction because prices on appliances and dwelling materials have risen so much. i.e. stoves, ovens, side loader washers, tank-less water heaters, A/C with higher SEER, windows and insulation. Also, Florida has recent hurricane criteria which has boosted construction and insurances costs a huge amount.

The 2400 square foot home at Paradise Key, Jacksonville Beach is five blocks from the Atlantic Ocean.
It is an area that often sees snow; the tropical demarcation line is only 35 miles or so south of Jacksonville, but north of St. Augustine. You can practically see the tree/foliage change types i.e. palm vs. jack pines over a few miles as you proceed up/down old highway A1A.
The home uses heat pumps for heating and cooling. Natural gas is available in the region. Natural gas air conditioners were popular fifty years' back, but I think corrosion of the internal parts made them extinct.
Nothing in the green world beats natural gas furnaces, water heaters and driers for cost or efficiency per BTU, should one be interested in new.

shoeshine boy.

I do realize that is what smart implies and Jack mentioned those things in the announcement video. I do appreciate your other thoughts as you are much more knowlegable then I on the green issues. I prefer gas which is what I have here in Ca.It is practical.

What i was mentioning is I wish they would have a place on the message board to discuss the new homes as i enjoy the presentations and love to keep up on them.

...and the post I put up was just a bunch of stuff that folks who only read the MB, or those who don't cover much of the posts in totality might be interested in. A whole lot of people just come and go.
It would be great if green folks would do more than simply hang out their banner. I am of the persuasion that the greatest number of them are in green businesses and really find it hard to bash and splash at the same time!

I missed Jack's illumination on the subject of smart. He tends to abbreviate definitions imho.
Maybe HGTV will follow your suggestion. I am going to assume it won't happen, and keep the steam cleaning going here. :>)
I will definitely put a fresh coat of paint on where needed and hang out a sign, "Welcome".
Best, T.
have yourself a great Fall, and see you around Dec 1.

hello and good evening I love HGTV and the all the partner network shows u name it i love to watch them. My main concern are the home give away...
Why build these homes and at the end people end up selling them I mean I understand people have situations specially in this hard economic times I think i speak out for more than half a million of viewers.Don't get me wrong having a dream come true is a blessing just like having luck on your side for once is more than a blessing. As i was thinking why give homes away i say to myself why HGTV do that they should give out RV'S that a home away from home and people could drive them to were ever they want and still have there current home and a home away from home. I mean this is just my opinion that i would love to share with you. I would love to hear back from you what would you say should there be homes given away or RV'S.

Welcome Janitza,
All the wonderful homes center stage different manufactures items as Tango mentioned so we can see them used in the homes and also consider them for the homes we live in along with the many DIY projects which peope can learn to do also. As smart and green are becoming the desire and need tiday, more and more are focused in that direction.

RV's are fun, but with the price of gas also a little prohibitive.

Now the dreamhome, Urban Oasis, greenhome (now smart home), and blog cabin are a dream to behold. Now there have been winners who have been able to keep and live in them for a while and we have enjoyed hearing from those fortunate people and the joy of the time they spent there. As HGTV has mentioned, the dream could also be selling the home they win to finance a dream home or RV in your case that meets their particular needs.

In my case, I have dreamed about and thought of lving in a number of them. Right now the blog cabin is high on my thought list, but also spend my time enjoying the Oasis and can hardly wait to see the inside of the new dreamhome. The wonderful ways they are decorated and the use of the wonderful items from the sponcers give us plently to dream about and see what would be practical for our use.

Enjoy the dream,
Judy Smile
