Now sure which group to post this to. We have to replace carpet & padding in a walk-down room because we had ground water come in to the house. The stairs and landing were perfectly dry. When the carpet people gave an estimate they said they could not match the existing carpet and we needed to replace the stairs carpet also. They gave the estimate to also replace the padding on the stairs as well as the main room. Do I really need to have new padding put in the stairs. The padding is 8 yrs. old. Are they just trying to get as much money out of me that they can? Thank you

replace padding-- used padding is gross and contains alot of bacteria Get several estimates - sometimes you can get a better buy on commerical "left over" good grade carpeting.
Doesn't hurt to ask. and yes, the stairs should match.

There would probably be a noticable difference in the step/texture when you walk from stairs to room. In the scheme of things it's not that expensive and any reputable company would give you the same advice.
The bigger question --what was the cause for the ground water to get into the house and has that been corrected b4 carpeting is replaced.

I agree to replace the padding on the stairs as there will be a noticeble difference between the feel of the stairs and room if the stairs have used padding. I also agree to make sure that the cause of the water problem has been resolved before putting in the new carpet. Don't want to have to replace again! Cool

One Hint: a carpet layer told me years ago to install the very best padding you can afford as it can make all the difference in the world on how the carpet feels to walk on even if you are putting in very inexpensive carpet.
