This show was on recently (Jan. 2012) and David redid a couple's living room. It was soooo ugly. David's rooms can be somewhat different but this one was just plain ugly!!! He put some colored light changing wall (not classy), shiny silver chairs, a gigantic clear coffee table with silver balls in it and his artwork was a giant pair of pink underwear! David, come on, are you serious?

I COMPLETELY agree with you!! He has done some wild rooms before and I can usually find something I like but this one was SO far out of the box as to have not really anything I liked.

Looks like he's going out with a bang!

prof, you made me smile. My grandmother lived near the university in our hometown and had a rent house that was usually occupied by students. My cousin moved in after she got married and found that the previous tenants had painted a traffic light on the wall in black enamel!

Did any of you actually WATCH the show?? David's Talent is in giving the client what *they* want- it's about exceeding THEIR expectations, and using his creativity and talent and skill to do it. CLEARLY this homeowner was THRILLED with the results. (Just ask me, I'll tall ya! I'm THRILLED with the results!!!!) Those silver chairs are to die for, David actually has the same ones in his own house, and that wall is a stunning, classy, beautifully made piece of interactive art that me and my kids turn on and dance with just about every single day. It has pulled us away from the TV for after dinner- pre bed-time entertainment.
I think it is a travesty when people invite David into their home and then tell him their favorite color is 'beige'... its COLOR SPLASH!!! If they want beige they should invite Candice Olsen into their homes (<3 Candice but it's the truth)
And that wall has nothing 70's about it other than the timeless awesomeness it shares with the iconic disco ball. If you wanna the wall in action, go look and be jealous cuz it rocks, BIG TIME:

Yes, I did watch. I was hoping since he left Miami that the show would offer a different style, back to the Bay area designs he had before. In my opinion the before looked better than the after. And yes - I prefer Sarah and Candace design's. My taste is more contemporary- traditional, ie classic with a twist. It's simply my choice.

HI muchness....It is always good to hear from the actual homeowners about how they feel about the final product so thanks for stopping by. I am glad that you and your family like what David did for you. But those of us that have expressed our opinions have the right to do just that here as well. Most of us did not care for the final product but maybe it looks better in person than it looks to me on TV.

You mentioned David giving the homeowner what "they" want but I seem to recall several shows where David convinces them of something. Maybe they do end up loving it in the end but then again mostly we never know. I haven't seen a reveal that wasn't greeted with enthusiasm so it is hard to know if they truly like it or are playing so for the camera. There was on show he did in Miami that soon after it aired pretty much everything he had put in the room was sold on Craig's list with the info of it having been used on Color Splash and the homeowners didn't like it.

Regardless of what we think you and yours like your new space and I am happy for you.

Was going to start a similar thread the night this aired, but I didn't wan to seem like an old grump. I don't care what the client wanted, this is a design show aired on national television. This was the ugliest room I've ever seen. If I ever read a disparaging comment about the Novogratzs' again, I'll just refer the poster to this mess.

Charles, you made me laugh with your distain for the room. Obviously it's not everyone's cup of tea but it simply isn't ugly. It's hard to see the results from the perspective of someone who hasnt seen the room in real life but I have been told from a number of friends that the show didn't do it justice- they don't even have a night shot of the room, which is spectacular with the wall lit. And the disco ball table is beautifully made.
Some of the stuff that was edited out of the show is that I am actually an artist and designer with A LOT of design opinions, and he listened to them all. I also spoke to David about how, more than anything, I wanted a fun, joyful space. ("resale value" is not my primary concern... If it was I likely wouldnt have tiled my bathroom floor in pennies.) The "Muchness" they spoke about is actually a movement I began in early 2011, following the loss of my identical twin girls in my third trimester. I found that wearing sparkle and color helped lift me out of my grief and depression. I wanted him to translate that energy and positive vibe into the space so I would feel surrounded by that joy And light as we made a fresh start with our new baby who was three months old at the start of the filming. I now share that idea online with a community of other babyloss parents or people just looking to tap into their joy and passion and Muchness. Some may think it's "too much", but for me, it's just Much enough.
I appreciate and respect that not everyone's gonna like it. But that doesn't mean he didn't do a fantastic job meeting his clients needs. He did. I also thought, from a purely viewer standpoint, it was one if the most entertaining episodes of color splash I've seen. :-D

Thanks for your input Finding My Muchness. I do have to admit that I forgot the ubiquitous IMHO in my post. Sometimes this insistance on being so P.C. when voicing ones own opinion gets a little tiresome. Obviously anyone who loves David's style is not going to think the room is ugly.

I for one am a middle aged (53) designer, Again I must clarify that I only include my age as a reference to my exposure and how popular culture in my realm has helped to develop my taste. I have been repremanded by other agitated posters in the past for including my age, so I want to make my context clear.

I am also a designer, again in deference to some of our more aggressive felow posters, I am not looking for kudos or any special dispensations for my carrer. It is only mentioned to put MHO (and how I HATE that phrase, as I am not humbled by my opinion) into context.

The furniture in this room looked very cheaply made. Not inexpensive, cheap. When I was in college I had no money, but being as design savvy as an 18 year old could be(sorry for the age thing, NOT!) my apartment was decorated using thrift shop furniture.It was fun and different as Retro was not yet an over used term in the late 70's. Surely these days chrome and black leather 50's office furniture would be "tired" but back then it was great and everything was well made.

I am all for home made art, went to art school, had my share, but a painting of panties in someone's living room is just a mediocre designers desperate cry to be edgy and cool. David is cute and since he "rides on my bus" I have forgiven him a lot over the years, but as time goes on I think he really has cr*ppy taste. IMHO

Sorry, muchness, but of ALL the adjectives available to describe that room, "classy" isn't one of them. When you choose to put your house on TV, you have to accept it when viewers pass judgment on the results.

did I say classy? (I'm on my phone replying- can't see the original thread) youre right. Classy is not the correct adjective. Of course, I didnt ask for classy. In fact, on my application it asked for inspiration that evoked my style, I referenced the Victorias Secret fashion show and the set of the Real Housewives of NY reunion show. Soooo, Not Classy. Haha.
I am not offended by this thread at all. After all, I came looking for it, and it's hardly the first time someone believed my taste to be "less than classy."... I'm totally ok with that.
I just felt it needed to be said that whether you like the room or not, David did a great job meeting my wish list. And also, I don't know how it read on TV, but the furniture and wall aren't cheap or flimsy. For example, the coffee table is 5/8" plexiglas and it is constructed solidly & beautiful. Charles- I was born in the early 70s so I "get" the aesthetic you're referencing. Its an aesthetic whose roots I like and don't mind referencing... And IMHO (), David evoked it in a modern, updated, creative way.
But, I stand by my initial statement- if you aren't a risk taker and don't want to push yourself too far outside the beige box, David should not be invited into your home to redecorate. In fact, I feel like when he reigns it in for color-shy homeowners the results are often awkward. (I'd prefer confident tacky over self-conscious awkward any day... Ok... Now say it... I guess I got my wish! Hahaha!!! Well, I love it!! )

Yes, you said "classy." I am one who LOVES color. In fact, I am thrilled that the house down the street from my own gaudy house has just been painted tomato red. My kitchen has every color in the rainbow...And I STILL think David does cr*appy work. He started off wanting to be a Disney cartoonist and it looks as though he is still trying to get there.

I like the final result. I like the clear coffee table. I can just see myself changing the balls maybe on christams. Use green and red, thanksgiving, put something orange. I think that coffee table is out of box and so unique and versatile. Like you said, he did it for you the HO and you liked it because it is what you asked for. David is designing for the HO not for the anone else. Each episode is a design for a specific client. NOt everyone has the same taste. He is still the best in my book.

Well, I loved it (especially the light wall), but I'm just a middle-aged woman with a degree in English Lit.

I do wish someone would explain to me how on Earth they can judge the quality of a piece of furniture from the few seconds that it appears on their tv screens. I'm amazed by their abilities.

I loved this episode but I love color and I'm finding that I also love the unique and different. That wall that changes color is amazing and I really wish I could have something like that in my home. I watched intently hoping that it would be something I could recreate but alas that is not possible...I don't have those skills. I know it would make me smile just to have something so cool and unique. And I loved the coffee table, there are so many possibilities with that piece.

sms29s66 - I said the wall was classy. And I meant that it is beautifully made and doesn't look like a cheap art project assembled by a bunch of college kids.

Otro- Thank You!! The idea to fill it with christmas decor is awesome! I've tried to think of other things to fill it with but I really don't know what I would like more... when the window curtains are open in the afternoons, the sunlight bounces off the balls and the entire room - floor, ceiling and walls is filled with sprinkles of light. It's beautiful.

MsWildhack- Thank You!!! There are shows on HGTV where they build stuff with a glue gun and a prayer and you can see it's gonna fall apart when someone looks at it, But David doesn't do that. The stuff he buys isn't cheap (I have to pay taxes on the value so I got an itemized receipt.
Actually, the only thing in the room whose quality was less than great was the upholstery job on the couch. I think they found a local guy because all of their contacts are in Miami, and the finishing quality leaves something to be desired. I had a scotch-guard company come to treat it and they said the quality of material used was amazing- probably $1000 worth of fabric alone, it's kind of a shape the finish was less than.... I still love the look of the couch, but I don't feel so bad when my kids bottles leak or they jump on the couch because it didn't start off pristine soooo...

You could buy a shadow box, stencil a design on the glass recreate the idea on a smaller scale!!

This design was not my taste, but it was what the homeowners wanted and they were happy with it. That is what matters. Actually the design was very creative. It would be a really dull world if we all liked the same things.
