I just bought a condo and I'm in the process of decorating my living and dining rooms. I want to install laminate wood flooring but the choices are overwhelming. I'm painting my walls pale yellow, most likely BM's Concord Ivory, and all my furniture is dark. I have 2 small black leather sofas and a black dining room table. My fireplace, TV Armoire, and book case are a deep mahogony color and 3 small tables are stained dark brown. I want to purchase some dark colored rattan dining chairs (Seagrass) and a few other rattan pieces. I love dark woods but I already have so much dark furniture that I'm afraid it will be too much. I definitely don't want to go with light floors. Also, I'm trying for a tropical feel in my rooms. Any color/shade suggestions for my floors would be greatly welcomed. Pictures are great too.

I think the medium-toned gunstock oaks which don't have a reddish undertone might be one way to go. Let's see...
Bruce hardwood floors and Coconut brown Stay away from the reds. |

Casey, who are you? You must be a top designer because all the choices you suggest for me are fantastic. First it was weston flax for the walls which I still might use but I got an answer for the color used in the Find Your Style room that I love. It is BM's Concord Ivory. I love the coconut floor color. It looks like the perfect choice. Thank you very much.

I just know where to look for things on the web. I looked at the bamboo flooring at LL. I didn't think the color was right. Too yellow/orange. You've already got the Concord Ivory...you need some contrast which is why I suggested the coconut brown.

I think it really depends on your taste. Light and natural tones always have a tendency to look more contemporary then dark wood floors. Darker tones always look more rich and traditional. As well as the type of wood you go with, some pine floors look really country while flooring like cherry looks more traditional. We had natural maple floors in our last house and I wasn't a big fan of them. They looked nice but they didn't have that rich feeling some wood floors give off. The house I grew up in was over 100 years old and had vertical grain heart pine floors which I love however I couldn't afford to do that in the house I'm in now not at 25.00 a sq ft for that wood. We went with Bruce Hardwood oak in their butterscotch tone, it works well for us because our decor is pretty much like pottery barn. I LOVE the coconut flooring that Casey suggested that is such a pretty wood. For me resale is always in the back of my mind so I try to keep the Permanent things such as flooring, countertops etc. "safe" in the color choices I make and neutral enough to appeal to 99% of buyers.
