Please help! I have 3 rooms in my basement that need to be painted.

First room: is our main family room. I will be taking off the wainscoting and probably painting the trim white. There are windows and a walkout patio door on one side, so the room gets some natural light. The fire place has very ugly tile that we will be eventually replacing with natural stone - but that is a project for next year. I like the idea of a warm color, deep red or pumpkin-y, but will that be too dark? Also, I am not sure, but can I paint the tile for a quick fix until we get stone put in?

Second room: (ignore the mess Smile) This will be our master bedroom. The trim/wainscoting is currently a cranberry red. I will probably paint this white and go with a darker color on the walls. I would like this to somehow coordinate with family room. Also has windows and patio door with decent natural light.

Third room: This is guest room/office. Very dark room with small windows. I was thinking of going lighter in this room b/c it is so dark.

Thanks for reading and your help if you have read this way-to-long post!

Here are links to pictures of the three rooms:

Oops, somehow your post slipped below the active ones...so sorry about that. Not much of a WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!

I've seen people paint tiles before. You'll need a high-adhesion primer. This is a toughie and I would talk to a REALLY good paint store guy about how to best do it. I've seen it done badly, and it can look flat and dull. RXSL and Faron and Paintguy and funcolors would be able to tell you how to do it better than I can.

As for a deep red or pumpkin color for the room itself...Reds can actually eat the light in a room...they absorb a lot of light so I'm not sure I would go with a red even with all your natural light. I might look at a Soft Pumpkin. They only absorb about 60% of the light as opposed to reds which usually absorb more than 80%. You don't say what paint brand you use...I want to start recommending my usual favorite BenMoore colors but I need to know what brand first.

Bedroooms? It's always easiest to start with bedding and work from there. Walls, IMO, should actually be just about the last thing chosen when doing a room.
