My home is a taupe color with white trim and black gutters. Do you think a black roof would look good?
Here are some pics of the exterior: http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/3997/house2os6.jpg http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/4851/decknewzt7.jpg Thanks! This message has been edited. Last edited by: Sandra215, |

A black roof absorbs heat...don't think it's a good idea at all. Best roof colors are midtone browny-grays that go with many other colors.
Pretty house, however. I would go with a shade a couple of tones darker than your siding. This message has been edited. Last edited by: casey31652, |

A black roof in TX might not be the best plan, but it's a good choice for many other locations.
Black is a good choice. Lots you can do with it. Can be pulled elegant and classic or grounded and casual. Personally I love a good quality architectural solid black shingle. Solid black is somewhat unique if you can find it. The tnedancy is to try to tone it down so it isn't so, well, black. Gray or colored flecks mixed in the black shingle only matters close up. When it's on the house at a distance, it may as well be solid black any way and those grayed or colored flecks can very well end up looking polka dotted and splotchy; it's the luck of the draw as far as how it gets nailed down. Other colors are thrown in because the up-close solid black samples scare people --pretty much what I've determined. Just be careful of the salesmen or designers who start with the roof isn't a feature business. The percentage of color that a roof holds is huge. Neutral roofing isn't necessarily the best answer. Done right, the color (and type) of the roof contributes in a homongously important and postive way to the overall exterior, but no one notices the roof per se. The goal shouldn't be "Wow, what a great shingle on that house" if you get my drift. |

Thanks for the quick responses!
Funcolor, could you recommend a particular brand and style like your referring to in your last post? Thanks! |

Yep. www.atlasroofing.com. The Pinnacle and Chalet shingles both come in various flavors of a good black. Be sure to check samples in person.

When we were looking for new roof colors, we drove around (back when we could afford frivolous car trips with no real purpose) and found houses with similar colors as ours. The roofer also helped us out (they furnished us probably 200 references...names, addresses and phone numbers) and also pointed out some roofs in the colors we were most interested in so we could see them. It was quite helpful. In our neck of the woods black is quite popular and a cost saver in the long cold months.

We are in the same situation wondering what color to do our new roof in. Go here http://exteriorfx.owenscorning.com/exteriorfx/Welcome.do you will be able to change the roof color, click on new design then click on the type of house that is most like yours (if you pick a house that the picture is taken at an angle the roof shingles will look different then if you use a picture of a house taken from the front of the house) anyway this gives you a good idea of what the house will look like with whatever roof color you chose you can also change the siding and trim on the house so it matches your house better).. I'm a graphic designer so I used a photo of my house in my graphic software and used different shingles on the roof although it helped us to narrow down I still haven't made a decision on what shade we will be going with for our roof. I love the look of a black roof (living in the North East I guess we could get away w/black) but I noticed the black really makes the house look smaller and it makes it look top heavy, so I think right now we are leaning more towards a medium grey color.

well i don't know who's ideal it was to put black gutters on that roof. YOu should have went with white. I would advise against a black roof. But Tamko Heritate series does have some nice looking black roofs. Especially if you want to spend a little more money and go with tamko heritage xl. They have a couple black roofs which blow away the competion. I'm not fimiliar with atlas shingles. Tamko has a plant in texas.
