I recently painted the foyer & main areas of our home BM Powell Buff. I'm now looking for a color for the 1/2 bath right off the foyer. I originally thought something in red, but decided against it. Any suggestions for a complimentary color to BM Powell Buff? I'm at a loss. Thanks!

    Hi, welcome to the boards!

Well, treating this as a color wheel exercise... Big Grin

Actually, red is a good color for buff (a.k.a yellow) because it's part of the yellow/red/blue triad. So, blue too. Opposite buff (yellow) is purple -- the complement. On either side of that is red-purple and blue-purple creating a split complementary scheme. On either side is orange and green, or orange and red or green and blue (and all shades in between) creating an analogous scheme. And, of course, there's the monochromatic scheme of yellow itself (all shades from pale to dark).

And, also, of course, the neutrals, though the light brown neutrals (which usually use orange -- or more precisely all three colors of the triad) tend to make buff look a bit dirty next to them. And I'm not so happy with buff and gray, unless it's a darker gray. And, of course, you need to watch the undertones of whatever color you choose.

So you have a lot of ways to go. Anything strike your fancy?

So many options!! ... I see you feel my pain! I was actually exploring something neutral like a dark tan/beige (without looking too washed out), or olive greens, and I even like some shades of blue/greens. The rest of my house is very traditional (oriental carpets with reds, tans, dark blues & greens). So, red would be an obvious choice for the bath, but I just want a change. Most of the blue/greens seem a bit too contemporary. I want the bath to pop since it's right inside the front door ... so I'm leaning more dark than light. Your thoughts? Do you have any specific BM color suggestions? Thanks for your help!!

Well, a pic for you (not mine -- some pro I swiped the pic from):

    blue-green with red

    sigh...I LOVE that pic.

while you're there in my Photobucket account, the pics usually have a paint color in the title (if I know it) -- you can see if you like anything. BenM's Edgecomb Gray is a very light warm gray which would be lovely with ivory and red. And you can see some of my favorite blue-greens such as Wythe Blue, Oasis (which is BenM's Palladian Blue in full-spectrum paint), BenM's Silver Sage which is a very silvery green, a lot of warm golds and golden tans (almost all BenM -- most of the paints are BenM), and I've even swiped some of funcolors' pics of her work. (I hope you don't mind, fc, but I refer to them so much it's easier for me. I should have asked first.) hmmm...the pic of Bar Harbor Beige is very serene and would be beautiful with a pop of red.
