Hi, I'm new here and I am horrible at decorating. We are in the process of redoing our bathroom and I would like to redecorate it.

    My question is........
What looks best? A home that has universal color throughout, or a home where the rooms are random in color. So far, both of my bedrooms have yellow walls and blue/white bedding.

I know it is a preference choice, but does a universal themed house just more pleasing to the eye

First of all, change your name! Yes, you can do this. As you noted, it's personal preference, but I like a home where there is lots of color, but all colors that are in the same "tonal" quality. My home is a traditional cape with separate rooms that you can't really see from one to another. So I'm tying it all together with the same trim color (except for my kitchen) but other than that, I have a strong green in the kitchen, two colors of gold in the dining room, a muted green in the LR with a deep green/blue accent wall, a dark earthy brownish color in the guest room, etc. I love the way it all feels and I get lots of compliments. I think you can start by looking at your clothes - what are the favorite colors you buy, do your colors mix and match easily because the colors go together? Maybe you could roam through furniture stores and fabric stores - not to buy anything, but just focusing on what catches your eye. Don't think twice about it - just a quick "I love that", "I can take it or leave it", or "Yuck". As far as your bathroom, for my own bathroom I like something serence, but for the guest bath/powder room, I like something with a bit more punch. Have fun!

What *looks best* is when wall color is fitted to the structure, properly collaborated with inherent light sources, chosen in accordance with design goals and meets individual expectations.

Looking to anything external before those internal benchmarks are explored and defined is a waste of time and you end up chasing color instead of controlling it -- that is to the extent that color can be controlled.

Life is too short to have only one color in your home, even if you love it. I have used different colors throughout, but I carry one color throughout each room. I have some shade 0f blue and red in each room

I'm sorry to be obtuse but why does she have to change her name?

She doesn't "have" to change her name - it was said with a smile, merely encouraging her/him to be more positive about what she/he can accomplish regarding color. I think it's fun to learn and figure it out, even when it's frustrating and even when I look at the little mountain of small paint cans in my basement.

Thanks Annie - you gave me some great advice. I think that my hubby is ready for a change as well, he likes the more rust/earth tones. I'm going to do some research.

I tend to like the color blue and green. Especially the color lime green Smile

I think that for now, I'll decorate a room that hubby would like, so it's the rust color.

    Also thanks for the encouragement.

BenM's Audubon Russet HC-51 is a rust color that's hard to beat:

    Shown with Sherwin-Williams Netsuke SW6134.

As for blues/greens, if you look through my album, I've got many with their paint names (usually).

HERE!! Unless you're up for abuse. RMS is a nasty place for innocent young decorators.

You can post pics directly on the Gen. Decorating board -- if you have more than one, then you "Reply" to yourself and attach another one. OR you can post a link here by hitting the URL button above and pasting in the exact web address of your Photobucket/Shutterfly/Flicker etc. account. (and give it a quick nickname like "My living room".)

BTW, I'm serious that these boards are a lot kinder and more encouraging than RMS. Well, except for the Design Star board when that show is broadcasting. Then it gets truly vicious.

And if you need more help that's not color-related, the Gen.Dec. board has some great people on it that are always generous with advice.

These colors are hot! I personally think it best to use the color combination tool available. These tools will show you how colors will flow with one another. There are many sites that offer this service.
