Have brainstorm idea to incorporate welcome lights into exterior Christmas window swags. Problem is I've never seen any suitable for outdoor use. In my ideal world these would be electric with photosensors - I can't imagine opening every window in middle of winter to turn each light on. If there's no such outdoor light, any ideas to SAFELY weatherproof the indoor ones? Thanks!

Hi, FlealineMom, I have an outdoor front-door mat that lights up "Welcome" as soon as the sensor determines movement and several outdoor decorations that include "Welcome" in the lighting including a Snowman, Cowboy and dozens of Candy Canes on a consistent rotation.

I don't think it would be wise to open interior windows just to send a "welcome" message or make them light/sensor sensitive. Instead, why not just put out some other decorations that say "welcome" and set out the ones with motion-sensors near the front door?

Thanks for sharing that option. I found some antique-looking solar-powered lanterns which I will incorporate into the window swags...adorned with silk poinsettias, vintage-looking shatterproof ornaments. Once I receive all the materials and assemble, I will post pictures - hopefully they'll turn out as lovely as I'm imagining!

Have you shopped for any of the LED swags that are battery operated and come with a built in timer. The timer turns the lights on and off for you. They sell ones that are rated for indoors and out.

ETA - They sell Christmas garlands with the lights already incorporated into the garlands. Do a search for pre-lit battery operated Christmas lights. I know Home Depot sells them.

Thanks still tryin - I am considering the LED battery operated ones as an option if the lanterns won't work...the lanterns are beautiful, however. Still tweaking this design to support the lanterns so they don't flop around

Our window swags with solar lanterns turned out beautifully. I've been trying to post photos but website rejects them - even trying one picture it says my file is too large.... For anyone thinking of making these, I'd suggest using LED auto on/off outdoor pillar candles inside lanterns since they emit a warm glow and 'flicker' like old gas lamps. I added the candles since windows face due north and solar lamps only light for about 2 hours. however, I intend to use the lamps on our deck year round so all is not lost - and they only cost $15/each...wish I could post photo!

I use a remotcontrol out let for my out sidelights to plug into and I turn them on/off from inside the house.
