Ralph's Rule of Plugs- Never, ever buy a woman anything that has a plug unless she specifically asks for it. My DH is a wise man, and he's made sure my sons in law know the rule, LOL. Anyone else have shopping rules?

Not just for Christmas...NEVER spend more then you can afford on gifts! Another...Plan a Pollyanna gift exchange in the case of large families whereby you each draw one name of the person you buy for. Another...Hold onto receipts and obtain gift receipts to enclose with presents. Also, shop early, use coupons and team them with sales. Also, carry a list of names on your shopping list along with sizes and notes of their likes and dislikes. Last but not least, remember the reason for the season. The gift of time, gifts to your favorite charity and daily RAKS are far better than material gifts.

I wonder if this rule has changed in this age of entertainment-based electronics because I know that I would be very happy to receive any device made by Apple with a plug.

I'm with you, Gracie. In fact I'm enjoying my early Christmas gift right now, an Apple IPad! Mind you I'm as low tech as you can get, so it's going to take a while to master this instrument, but so far I'm loving it!

They are fun, aren't they? I have the original one and have enjoyed it immensely. I'd love to upgrade, but I spent my discretionary funds on holiday dishware this year.

Think the plug thing is more for vacuums, irons, toasters etc. I have the iPad 2 and can't imagine how I lived before it came into my life. My favorite gifts are when DH buys something I mentioned in passing that I really wanted but I didn't think he'd remember or had listened to what I was saying.

mamaspoon, you got it right. My grandmother used to give everyone in the family something personal, and my mom (her DIL) would get like a blender, or an iron.

After a couple of years of that I probably would have said something to the order - Oh look, Dear, I must have opened Your gift.

there is a cute episode on Everybody loves Raymond about his Christmas present to Debra and he wants to buy her an electric heater and can't understand why she wouldn't be thrilled with that! My DH has always given me romantic and/or meaningful gifts but then those are what he wants also (although sometimes his do have plugs) I have a hard time with presents because my DD and her family are the only people we buy for and since they can afford much more than we can and since they are also clever and talented it is a real chore to come up with ideas. Not only that but DSIL b.d. is Christmas Eve! DGD is probably the least difficult as she likes "product" and perfume etc.
