Haven't had a crowd for a holiday in several years. I head somewhere with a side or 2... fine with me.
Niece has been coming over since she was about 8 (now 17) for a sleep-over, feeding frenzy, crafting and decorating session. She enjoys setting rarely used diningroom table as if the QUEEN were coming to visit. Have a set of reindeer plates, a set of nice silverplate flatware (easily for 12) and some wine glasses. Think this year we'll hit the thrift store and go ALL OUT with 2-3 different glasses. Not like a table that won't get used... more of a holiday decoration for us.

Whenever our home is on our town's Christmas Homes Tour, I always set the dining room table as if dinner party guests were expected to sit down shortly -- even down to menus and place cards. It made the dining room seem more warm and friendly.
I'm determined to take a picture of my dining room table set up for Christmas this year. Unfortunately, I'm usually so busy cooking and getting ready that I completely forget to do it.
Right now I am in the throes of a fantasy about setting a "fantasy" Holiday table. Keep thinking it is really a silly idea and then keep buying elements for it! This is just a creative exercise, won't be for real in any way.

Go for it! I set my table frequently 'for the season at hand' and then hubby and I eat at least one meal/week there with the pretty stuff (otherwise, we eat off tv trays...ha!)

Oh what fun. I LOVE a beautiful table at Christmas. What better reason to dress it to the max especially if entertaining. It's no secret around here that I adore tablescapes. I typically use a gold lurex thread on cream tablecloth, cream with gold edge linen napkins, cream/white and gold edge china,gold chargers, gold flatware, crystal stemware, a lush scape and coordinating chandy and candles. Even gourmet chefs believe that presentation is as important as the cuisine. It's food for the eyes.
