I was thinking I would plant Cranesbill/Johnson Blue in front of these Endless Summer hydrangeas (pink flowers) which are just emerging. (pic of JB in next post.)
This is about a 19 ft run. I have about 18" in front of them to put something as an "edger."
How many JB do you think I'll need?
Took this pic thru a window screen, cuz it's raining right now. I hope to put clematis behind the hydrangeas. Any ideas for those?
Can anyone do a mock up???
Any other suggestions?

My hydrangas are about 5 years old and are at least 5 foot square. Do you think you will have room enough to plant anything in front? Your idea would look very nice with the clematis climing up the trellis and low flowers in front but I question if you have enough room.

All varieties of hydrangea give special bloom and need no enhancement of other flowering plants. It would be a shame to diminish what hydrangea do for the garden.
I would put the hardy cranesbill in another location.

well, you both might be right. I will rethink about putting something in front of them. It's just so bare in the beds until the hydrangeas start "growing up and filling out." And these are just 2 y.o.

I have others on the other side of the house with a pathway of hostas. They come up early, while the 'drangeas are developing behind them. I guess I was going for something to fill the space until the 'drangeas come into show on this side too. (too much sun for hostas on this side). The hostas cover up the base where there are no flowers on the 'drangeas during the summer and keep out the weeds in front of them, etc.
