When I bought them they had at least 5 flowers. After a few days, this is what's left. I read that they should bloom until early summer. Did I do something wrong?

I find that deadheading colombine helps the re blooming.. Mine bloom great in spring, and then sporadically the rest of the season.

those stars ...are they done, or are the coming? I don't want to remove them if they will eventually bloom throughout the rest of spring and into summer???

The "stars" are seed pods. You can remove them to encourage the plant to keep blooming.

I'm bumping because I have another question....today I went to deadhead, and inside were itty bitty seeds. Do I just drop them to the ground? spread the around the plant? or discard them? I've looked up care instructions, but I couldn't find anything that tells me what to do with the pods.

Thanks once again,

Lea

Hi Leabooski - I have lots of Columbine and have never had luck with reblooming after the initial flush. As to the seed pods, I carefully clip them into a paper bag to share being careful not to let many of them escape into my garden as they are too eager to grow just about everywhere. Then when the plants start to show signs of fatigue from the summer heat, I cut them back and they grow new prettier leaves for the rest of the summer.

Each day is a new opportunity to grow!

I have lots of columbine & I don't get a second flowering either. As for the seeds, I do just let them drop to the ground & grow. If I have too many in a spot the following spring, I just pull them up.

Thanks for the replies...new question...I deadheaded, then picked apart the little stars and inside were itty bitty seeds. Now, some were the brightest shade of green, some were a very deep shade of green, and some were black. This is my 1st time with columbine, so I'm not real sure if I'm doing this right. I can't find anything about the color of their seeds. If anyone knows, could you let me know?

Thanks so much.

Lea

Mine are black when they have dried out. I'm not sure they would be viable if they hadn't dried completely.

Just let them drop to the ground, they will reseed quickly. It looks like that is getting ready to open. I have about 4 or 5 different colors.

When the seeds are black, they're ripe & ready to re-seed...just like Karen said. Smile
