to all of you who gave advice last fall about preparing a new bed using this technique - THANK YOU, THANK YOU! what a success; i can't even begin to describe how happy i am with the result. meanwhile, the new area in the front yard that we prepared the old way using a load of compost, digging and turning, is a disappointment. the soil is still very sandy and i have more weeds of varieties that i have never seen before. i am a convert to this new (for me) method.

I sure am glad to hear from someone else that has done this method of gardening. My DIL and I spent all day tuesday putting in our lasagna garden. It's work but sure beat tlhe rototiller!! We are so excited to see how this method works. I hope we have as good a result as you have.
hi ggnok. i got all my info on this method right here; all the gardening forums have great folks who are so generous with their knowledge. also, at the top of each forum is a bar with a spy glass that says "find". click on it then type in "lasagna gardening" and lots of stuff will come up. i put down a layer of newsprint and wet it with the hose then a pretty thick layer of shredded leaves, grass clippings, etc. (during the year i keep a sort of compost heap using a large ring of turkey wire. we throw in our leaves, grass clippings, old soil from pots and planters, some garden dirt and other garden debris. i don't even bother to turn it; just water it once in a while. in the fall, this is what i used on top of the newsprint.) all of this is done right on top of the grass of whatever else is growing there. i plan on using this method in lots of places this fall and now i see that some folks even use it in the spring. what a great idea; why didn't i think of that!!!

The lasagna method saved me a lot of back pains due to fact that I didn't have to dig up any grass on my property to create flower beds. The best way to use the lasagna method is to do it about six months before you are ready to plant in the bed.
For example, I prepare my beds using this method in the spring and do most of my plantings in the fall. I'm also glad I got this knowledge before I started my garden at my new home. Our dirt was rock hard before I put the newspaper down, now my spade easily digs when I'm ready to plant. When that newspaper breaks down, I find so many earthworms my kids stand around while I'm digging so they can hold one
you betcha!... when I learned about this method, I was about to start a very big project.. and there was no way I was gonna be into getting rid of half my backyard grass to do it... thanks be for Lasagna!!!.... this is what it looked like then...
and here's now...what I lasagna'd was in front of the shop and all down the near side, past what you see.... !!....I LOVE LASAGNA!!!
and then I did the bed on the left side of the pathway... and then... and then....LOL!!and fer sure the best thing you can do is make it ahead of when you want to plant... the summer/fall to spring is what I used, but spring to fall works good, too... MaggieJoe you done GOOD!!!
