My butterfly bush had lots of blooms but now they have dried up. Should it be dead headed and how much water do they need.

I have a few BB's and as soon as I get a chance, I cut off the old blooms. It will bloom all summer here in upstate NY,not sure where you live. I also think they are pretty drought tolerant because I don't water them specifically if it hasn't rained and they still do fine.

I'm down here in a pocket of exceptional drought area. I don't water my butterfly bushes...just rain. They do fine. I also don't dead head...I still get new blooms most all summer/fall just not as many as I would if I did dead head. That would be quite a job on my bush...it's about 7'tall AGAIN!

Yes, I deadhead to keep it going. Just clip off spent bloom.

I was deadheading until it got to be 103 in the shade. I might start back once we get back to more normal temps....hasn't seemed to hurt the butterfly population any, they just ignore the dead blooms. The only reason really to deadhead is for asthetics.

Also, deadheading helps to stop seed production...takes too much energy from the plant/bulb. Deadhead!

Judge not, you don't know their story.

I never deadhead my butterfly bushes but one of them looks terrible right now. It's just too hot and not enough rain.

Just water them well , they might still have a chance of surviving.
