They will look pretty until the beetles arrive & then they get eaten to bits so will cut down but will save seeds birdie! I have a mix...some Mgt sent me & also bought some really dark purple ones (seeds I started) Magic Merlin. They have been posted here many times but this year growing in my new daylily compost they got giant! So nice splash of purple by the patio & long blooming.
Hi J~ They are in rich soil so you can see what a difference good soil makes!
I was wondering myself about how many babies are crammed in that old bird house! i hung out a brand new house & they build the nest in that old thing! When the mom shows up they all jump all over each other with open mouths. So darling! When I moved my chair closer the parents didn't show up for a very long time & then my battery died! LOL
Basket~ Wanted to try something different & saw this idea in a magazine so see what happens! Just an experiment. (so far so good but worry about the really HOT weather)
Your zebrina is amazing! I had one 2 years ago that the birds must have brought but it only grew to about 12" tall and never returned. It did flower and they are so pretty. I had to look it up now and Perennials says 24-47" tall. Yours look taller than that. They are not hardy in my zone unfortunately.
Think same family ~ grows the same ~ referred to sometimes as French Hollyhock I think. I was wrong about the name~ Duh ~ Mystic Merlin. I got those seeds a few years back. You can google.
Wow, Muddy. My zebrinas aren't going to get THAT tall. They'll get about 3 feet tall, tho. I got my first one as a bird gift & they reseed & come up every year...always in a little bit different spot.
Love your wren. Love all your pics.

Wow those are some tall plants! I had some years ago but they disappeared. Yours are giants. Love the baby wrens, their mama must be busy feeding those hungry mouths! The triple planter is a good idea, I'm sure you will soon have flowers spilling over the edges.

My zebrinas had all disappeared, what I thought were the zebrinas were Lavatera...they came from the back garden to the front. But, today, I found a zebrina out in the compost ditch...gonna save those seeds & re-plant in the front. They aren't nearly as invasive as the Lavatera...which, by the way are also from the same hollyhock family.
