This spoiled SoCal gal is looking at 5 nights of predicted freezing weather. I put up my little "greenhouse" & placed my potted plants into it a week ago. Rain tonight so we should have pretty snowy mountains in the morning. Summers are just this side of hell, but you don't have to shovel sunshine... http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j8/KGinCA/

Hey KG - I know what you mean. Our morning temps will be unusually low for the next few days. There may even be a dusting of snow here, which is rare. I try to get outside a little each day to clean up a bit, but it would be more enjoyable with more sunshine. I did take some orchids indoors, so we can gaze at some color and beauty in the house.

And we are having just the opposite. Our low last night was 65º & supposed to be in the upper 70's today & may hit 80's on Sat. & Sun. "The soil is the source of life, creativity, culture and real independence." David Ben-Gurion

Wow, so sorry to hear that. I know how spoiled ya'll must be, always used to warm weather. I'm sorry to tell you, but our temps have been about "15 Degrees above normal" for a few days, for this time of year... Go figure (???)This message has been edited. Last edited by: Wavy,

So still tryin, which county are you in?? I am ready for winter to end...how many more days? Summers are just this side of hell, but you don't have to shovel sunshine... http://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j8/KGinCA/

according to the calendar, there's 9 weeks & 5 days left till spring. about time to get the seeds going isn't it? cheryl hill

I'm in Los Angeles, in the Valley not far from where you used to live. There are 67 days left until spring. How are your water rates? Are you on water restrictions like I am. 12 HCF's per month until June or you pay $6.00 per HCF instead of $4.00. Did you live here when they started the tiers? We're on water restrictions again with no end in sight. It looks like will get rain this weekend but it will only amount to the ground being spit on. I checked from Ventura Co. to San Diego Co. and there are freeze watches for this weekend. Lawns in the neighborhood froze from an earlier cold spell. I saw frost damage on trees and plants throughout the neighborhood. I'm more concerned about the farmers in our state having crop damage from the possible freeze this weekend. We don't don't make our livelihood on what we grow as they do. Try and keep warm. Here have some this

Isn't that weird weather for SoCal? My cousin lives southwest of L.A. and she had frost on her car and it was 27 degrees this morning. YIKES. Wanda
|
Yes, it's very weird weather. Even San Diego which normally has a low of 48 is going to have a low of 33 on Saturday. I wonder how CARose plants will fare. The coldest month where I live is December. My average temperature should be 68 during the day and 42 for the low. The coastal areas have cooler day time highs but much warmer overnight lows. Our weather is why California can grow so many crops year round. Strawberries are planted in January here. The cole crops and celery are other crops growing right now, to name just a few. January is also a harvest month for lemons. The following is a breakdown of the top agricultural states and California crops. Top 5 Agricultural States in Cash Receipts, 2011 State Rank Total Value Billion Dollars California 1 43.5 Iowa 2 29.9 Texas 3 22.7 Nebraska 4 21.8 Illinois 5 19.8 California’s agricultural abundance includes more than 400 commodities. The state produces nearly half of U.S.-grown fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Across the nation, U.S. consumers regularly purchase several crops produced solely in California.
|
Look at our harvest seasons for crops grown in California. CALIFORNIA FRESH PRODUCE SEASONS The following represents fresh peak season availability of California Grown produce. Proper storage may extend the marketing life of many of the commodities such as potatoes, onions and apples. The Coastal Areas of California with its cooler weather is capable of extended production and harvest seasons (see commodities with *). The warmer Southern Areas of California also produce commodities which are harvested earlier than the rest of the State. Seasons of greenhouse production are not included.

You do all know that I am carrying on just to give you a chuckle? Well, IT'S 7:30am AND IT IS STILL 30 degrees OUT THERE!!!!!! My birdbaths are frozen...I went out to feed the birds and now I am frozen... The low for tonight is supposed to be 24 degrees. I just hope this means we will get it all over with earlier this year, ya think? Hmmm...still tryin - "in the Valley not far from where you used to live" - San Fernando or San Gabriel?? No water rationing here at this time. .This message has been edited. [QUOTE]Originally posted by KG in CA: You do all know that I am carrying on just to give you a chuckle? In this case, I think you are totally justified in carrying on!!! [QUOTE] It's hard to believe that it is colder in Calif. than it is up north! This morning it was 45 deg. I think. I only wore a hat once this winter, and then I took it off in the afternoon. I hope our mild winter continues, and I am so sorry about your ABNORMAL WINTER! Hope you don't get the dreaded "S" word...... SPRING HAS F I N A L L Y SPRUNG!!!!!

Wavy, the dreaded "S" word does occur in So Cal. I was driving home to Las Vegas from San Diego in February and just made it through the Cajon Pass before they closed I-15 due to the weather. I was just following the taillights of the car in front of me, hoping they stayed on the road. Me, a Florida girl, driving in that mess when my passenger was born and raised in Chicago! www.floridafarmgirlsworld.blogspot.com Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.

Well, I do not have a clue what you all are talking about! Spring will come when it's ready and I'll be ready for it. I've made up several plant orders which I have no intention of filling but it gives me ideas of the direction I'll take in continuing to renovate my garden. I seldom wear a hat here even when it's really cold. Just messes my hair! Always bring one tho in case I have to walk a distance. Enjoy wherever you are and "bloom where you are planted". We hit a high of 79º yesterday! Not sure what the high was today as DH & I were out running around the country side. At 7:30pm. here we are 66.8º! And check out what I post over on Toot's thread about GO LOOK!!! "The soil is the source of life, creativity, culture and real independence." David Ben-Gurion
