Okay, season is nearly over. Year One: tomatoes were okay despite that fact that they seemed to have caught sumtin-sumtin, not exactly sure what. I guess a fungus amongus! Got more 'maters than I ever got before! (that's not saying much, however!
Zuchini Squash ~ Powdery Mildew Galore
Had one baby Zuchini to taste. Not planting this mess again (spreads too much!)
Red Pepper ~ Got some type of Wilting fungus and had to pull it out and dispose.
Batting average, not too good.....
How was your veggies?
What do you do to the soil to ensure that this doesn't come back next planting season? Do you do anything special to the soil??? Thanks!
(I don't feel 'that' terrible because I noticed my Green Thumb Neighbor didn't fare that well either. Her tomatoes didn't do good, turning yellow and her squash had POWDERY MILDEW too.
This is the 2nd year her tomatoes didn't do that well. I'm thinking maybe she needs to do something to her soil. There may be a soil-borne fungus. I'm surprised as she's a great gardener. I guess that's life....

Well, the tomatoes are coming along slowly..except for the cherry ones, they have some to pick every day.. Did pick a small bag of assorted hot peppers for my doctor..and there are more forming. Cucumbers have the wilt already but I did get some. Yellow squash produced one edible one and has a baby on the vine but the leaves are mildewed.. However, in a 6 x6 plot I planted corn.. just for a lark. We had two ears earlier in the week and I picked 8 yesterday. They were all a good size. Those left will be the "interesting" ones, that didn't get fully pollinated, but will taste just as good. Considering I couldn't do as much as I wanted to this year, I did ok. And orf course the elephant ears, my pride and joy are humongous ..

Green Thumb Neighbor? LOLing. For starters this was a very bad gardening year. If your "green thumb neighbor" planted her tomatoes in the same exact spot as last year, that might account for the crop failure. Tomatoes need to be rotated every year to prevent soil borne diseases & fungus. If you plant potatoes, rotate those as well, but don't plant tomatoes where you had potatoes last year, and vice versa.

Now that we've solved that problem (?????) my veggies did very well all things considered. Needless to say, they got watered every other day, deep watering, otherwise there would have been nada. Finally chopped down all but one each of the zuchinni and yellow crookneck squash. Then the remaining ones died for some reason...so I replanted one hill of the squash. It's growing. Tomatoes are just now beginning to wind down.......green beans did great, october shelly beans nada......even with watering they dried up. I think we got 5 quarts off two rows total. Purple Hull peas are going great guns, in fact, I've started giving away peas. We have two more rows of a different varitey pea coming on, and still have to sow our winter greens.

The freezer is full, the pantry shelves are full, so all in all, it was a decent veggie gardening year for us.

My onions did so-so, but I got enough to last til about Dec.
My maters got early blight on the bottom and as the crept up the horn worms came and took are of the tops. I pulled them! Didn't get that many maters this year. I still have 3 grape tomato plants that are starting to regrow from the horn worms...I'll leave them.
My bell pepper plants are being attacked by something eating parts of the peppers.
My spring/summer carrots didn't do well, found out I had planted them on top of a plastic field drain...about 3" below ground. I have no idea how I have missed that thing as I usually hand dig.
My green beans were way late going in but we had our second mess from them tonight...tasty!

I've got some winter stuff started in the garden house and I've added manure, lime & alfalfa pellets in the empty spaces getting ready.
