Toots, does the tree have thorns? The acacias that we see out at Ft. Pickens have thorns. They cut part of them down, but they came right back from the roots. Guess they've decided to leave them alone. The birds love them.
Sorry Toots, I've never seen anything like that. I'm thinking it is something that should be tropical that just "happened" to grow there. Could the seed have been blown in during an old hurricane?

Nance... you meant SC, right?....oh, my.... so much to see!!.. Old Town is wonderful... the covered shops (blocks long!!) in City Market will take a day.... Folly Beach is a wide expanse of packed sand that I fell in love with.... don't miss eating at the Lost Dog while on Folly.... the plantation garden we went to was lovely, but the one we're going back for is Middleton.... visit the Angel Oak if you can.... the Battery, the Aquarium, the lighthouse at Folly Beach... on,and on.... there's so much that we didn't get to do, so we'll be going back right soon!!... hubby was taken by the bridge!!...
getcha a book as soon as you get there....you'll miss too much if you don't have a clue.... like we did....This message has been edited. Last edited by: Toots,

still tryin'.... oh, so close... but it is in bloom now, not in fall.... and the leaf stems either don't open any more than they are or they closed up because it rained on them or something..... great suggestion... might have to research the 'family' of that one....

OMG! This is hysterical toots. I have a Cassia tree. Rub is's leaves it smells like popcorn. I was going to post a picture of it on a post. Flowers smell like popcorn too. I'll go and take a picture of my itty bitty tree. It still isn't the one you posted a picture of, but it is unique.

and... I meant to tell Vera ... they didn't have info on many of the plants there... just historic records, like this tree is five hundred yrs old, these azaleas were brought from somewhere, etc..... this is a 'romantic' garden... kinda like mine... overflowing and shoulder to shoulder.... only two places, the maze and the little garden out back were clipped and formal..... the other plantation, Middleton, is more formal... we'll get that one next trip!!....

The website says it doesn't live longer than 20 years...but that definitely looks like the tree. I was thinking it was something in the cassia family also. Brownie, I've tried to grow the popcorn tree too but it didn't grow past 18 inches and then frost hit before I could get it inside... Nice job getting it to bloom! Was that from seed?

Got it at a local greenhouse...will be bringing it in and will try my best to over winter it. I just love the smell of it, makes me want to go to the movies, just to smell the popcorn, cuz I don't like popcorn

BT's popcorn tree is not the same as the one we call popcorn tree down here...ours is actually a tallow tree, and invasive! Ours don't smell like popcorn but it looks like popcorn when it blooms.
