O.T. Do You Take Vitamins?
My bottle of multi-vitamins is almost finished. I'm just wondering if I should keep taking multi-vitamins for the rest of my life!!!
Have there ever been studies proven that people who take multi-vitamins usually live till 94?
Wondering out loud.... thanks!! :^D

Wavy, There are two schools of thought on vitamins. Some swear by them ...then you have docs and others that claim they are a waste of time and money. If you eat well and have a balanced diet every day I'd say don't worry about taking them. Check with your Dr. I wouldn't normally take a D supplement but my count was practically non-existant. I do like Vit C when I get a cold. I also don't think multi's can hurt.....

I have taken a multi for years. And yes, I can tell a difference if I don't take it for several days. I feel drug out with not as much energy....but I'm a lot older than you and for many years I was close to burning the candle at both ends and we didn't always eat like we should have.

Since I am older and have gotten to the "leg cramp" age I also take a Vit.C/magnesium/zinc combo and Vit. E which if I miss even one day of those...I get terrible leg cramps at night. That doesn't work for everyone, ya'al have to find out what works for you. And sometimes I still have to take a Hyland's leg cramp pill (quinine) when I can't walk them off.

I use to sw ear when I was younger that they made me more pepier. Now that I am older I don't know. Some days I need a stick of dy namite to get me moving. I take them anyways in hopes they will eventually make me feel better. Getting old is not for sissies.!!lol

Every Dr. I ever asked has always said "No" to multi vitamins. They do blood tests and then determined what I needed. D, Calcium, Lutein (eyes), B Complex, and Iron are my daily ones right now. Something about designing vitamins to meet each person's needs. The B Complex is what I use to fight off head colds. I also add alittle powdered protein to a shake occasionally.

Not to my knowledge! However studies are not necessarily to be believed anyhow, just depends on who commissions them and for what purpose.

I have taken various vitamins and supplements for almost 40 years and it does make a difference in my energy levels. I don't take them with the idea of living longer but I believe I can live "better" by giving my body all the nutrients it needs. I now have a holistic medical doctor and a naturopath who suggest what I might take. They recommend a mineral supplement as much as vitamins. This is especially important for those eating non-organic foods. I do eat mostly organic but still occasionally take them.

For those who live in the north it's important to take Vitamin D as we cannot get it from the sun at all in the winter. I have had my levels of D tested and do take it but not every day since it's stored in the body.

I would never depend on most medical doctors for advice on nutrition as that is not their field of expertise. Most are experts at prescribing pharmaceuticals mostly. I also don't follow what most nutritionists say as their education leads them to advise using soy and milk products for nutrition which I am told by my doctors are not healthy for most people.

I don't take them either, other than Biotin for my thinning hair, and that was at my doctor's suggestion. Meds, esp. b/p meds will make your hair thin after long term use, as will some cholesterol meds, and I take both.

I did ask my doctor about taking mulit's.....he said basically what one of you said. So long as you eat healthy and get plenty of exercise, all you are doing is having healthy p e e. Your body only absorbs so much, the rest is eliminated. Since I have regular bloodwork for my cholesterol, so far, so good. I appear to be healthy without taking them.

Seriously now, I have taken vitamins for years. Mom always gave us "One-a-Day"...remember those?
I started taking Glucosamine Chondroitin about 15 years ago, I can tell it helps because I can still use my chronic bad knees. DH and I both take a multivitamin, fish oil, and biotin. He takes Red Yeast Rice to keep down his cholesterol and I take extra vitamin C, E, D and CoQ10. All of these are pretty low doses so I know I'm not over-doing it.

I forgot that I take CoQ10 too. But it is to help with a permanent side effect from the radiation I had several years ago...and it does help with that.

I agree with Lucky on studies & medical Dr.s. Few medical Dr.s study nutrition or a body's nutrient needs...and those are different for each of us depending on our environments & activities.

Some of you will remember this siggy line that was used by a fantastic gardener in the UK....

I had a life threating virus,thankfully I survived. The specialist told me to take a multi-vitamins plus a B complex. He pulled me out of the virus. I had other treatments and meds but he was so good that if he told me to take them I'm sure there was proof in his mind that they help. My husband, also, had him and has survived stage 4 cancer for over 12 years. A lot of vitamins are lost in food that are processed.
