Hello, I have 2 areas in my garden where we have Zinnia's. Currently the flowers are looking worn out from the summer here in New Jersey. Can I cut the Zinnia's back and expect the Zinnia's to come back in full ? I appreciate your suggestions. Thank you ! murph

Yes, you can cut them back. Don't cut them all the way to the ground, but to where you'd like them to bush out. They will grow more & send out more flowers. Have fun.

This is so interesting. In all my years of gardening, I did not know you could do this with zinnias. Only goes to prove that you are never too old to learn.

Thank you Mgt.

You're welcome, too vera ellen. One way I found this out is that one year I planted zinnias at the end of my fence post. The neighbor thought they were weeds & mowed them down. The zinnias came back & were nice & bushy & gorgeous.

LOL...that's how I found out about the volunteer spiderwort..a stray cow ate mine down to a couple of inches. Then it grew back stronger and more full than ever.

I just cut a bunch of mine this morning...before I saw this post.
I've been fighting some "worm" and most of my older blooms looked nasty...so I cut off those stems back to where they came off the main stem as long as there wasn't a new bloom coming any place.
My soap/water (liquid lemon joy) has been killing them...but they got way ahead of me before I realized I had a problem.

That's funny z9 lady. Isn't it amazing how we learn some things & can put them to good use? Big Grin

ga.karen, good luck with yours, I'm sure they'll come back nice & strong. I usually have to fight powdery mildew on mine.
