It definitely looks like a Bald Cypress...mine hasn't turned color yet, it has to freeze first. If the seed balls were really sticky..then it's a cypress.

FFG & zone9 said what I was thinking...that's why I wondered about a closeup of the seeds. I don't remember ours being sticky but they are kind of knobby.
Edit to add...I just remembered, we had 2 cypress trees of some kind or something closely related at our house near Monticello, Ill. They weren't as colorful as the one in your pick but they did loose their leaves every fall. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ga.karen,

When I lived in LA I had a large Bald Cypress in my backyard. Only after they get a certain size do you get the cones and the "knees" coming up around the tree. I have been growing a seedling from that tree for 12 years now. It's about 15ft tall but no cones yet. I have a few knees though, that why I planted it far from the house. The cones when ripe turn brown like pinecones and break apart releasing the separate seeds which are covered in resin. It smells good...like a Christmas tree, but hard to get off your skin. I've had enough of them stuck to my feet, and they are sharp.
I noticed it cuz it almost looked like an evergreen that turns orange! Yep I agree I think its a Bald Cypress & see it is found in my state. It is growing in moist area by a boathouse & right by a lake. It says it grows in areas that flood & surely the lake where I spotted it must overflow at times. The pods look like what I can recall. Wish I had one! The tree is glorious & really stands out. I wonder if I planted the pods ~~~? I might get one to grow! The one I saw had a wide shorter shape tho...maybe the park people have topped it?
They actually like to grow IN the water too, that's when you see many more knees. Mine grows about a foot and a half a year. I've seen people top them off too, they are short and fat.
