I just want to offer my prayers that those in the path of Hurricane Sandy come thru it safely with not too much damage to homes. I really must give credit to all the people who routinely have to deal with Hurricanes yearly. Honestly, this is like the 2nd Hurricane in a row that they are predicting for the northeast and I am just nervous. We are unused to things like this and I just hate having to tie everything in the back yard down. I really feel bad for those people who deal with these scary situations regularly. OMG, it's really scary and we never really had any type of disasters other people have lived through. You all are amazing and I am really proud of ya'll, honestly! Stay safe, ya hear??? XOXOXOX
I'm with you Wavy, just not used to these things anymore. When I was a kid, they were frequent visitors, but blew through in a couple of hours and didn't bring snow.. Scares the panties off me.. Done tying down. Will do a final check tomorrow and then just pr*y.

Actually, don't know that you'll need them now, but for future reference, those chemical packet hand warmers that hunters and outdoors people use really work. I've used them in winter when birdwatching and its amazing. They'll last up to 6 or 8 hours or more after they once start warming up.
Sometimes I think the worry and anticipation is more stressful than the event, but then I KNOW the event can be catastrophic too, so..... Just take a deep breath and think, "this too shall pass". Been in your shoes.
Echoing everyones message about thoughts & prayers for those in the path of this storm. Had a brief note from a friend in Norfolk last evening. She was on the laptop...they had already lost power.

We are on the very fringe & woke up to a broken flagpole on the house today! High wind warnings for us! Praying for all on the coast & in the storm area!
I am less than 10 miles from the ocean in Toms River. High winds starting to pick up here. Friends posting pics of roads turned into rivers at surrounding LBI, Seaside, Pt. Pleasant and Atlantic City. And the worst of it hasn't hit us yet. This is going to be bad. Everyone stay safe!!

It's getting bad!!! Lots of wind and rain. It's not supposed to make landfall for another 7 hrs. or so. Much worse than last yr's storm (Irene) All mass transit has been shut down, ~ buses, trains, subways, tunnels, bridges soon and many roads are now closed. The hardest part is the waiting. I don't know if I should cook something for later on or run the dishwasher while I still have power? (did enuf laundry already) Next time, I will buy more Parmalat Milk, maybe a little more food and snacks! (we're not the type to run out to buy tons of food & stuff every single time they predict a snowstorm either). So far so good. Lost power early this afternoon. We have a generator. So all is good. No phone service but I can't deal with that now. I have no intension on going out and checking the main box until this storm has past.

we're getting light rain, but the winds are dreadful...don't have a garage, so park to side of the house with no trees...thank heavens we havn't had any snow here in detroit, altho north a bit there might be..
dh had cleared leaves off the gutter guards...sounds so crazy to say we made prep-time im mi!
some people on lake fronts, tied down outdoor furniture, and we had a few fools surfing!

I called the power company about a tree on a line, it was sparking and smoking. They told me to call the fire department. REALLY? How bout you call the fire dept. and then get someone out here to fix it!!

We made it fine.. Lost power for about 30 hours, lost a piece of facia off the house but otherwise no damage. It was one scary night Monday night. Feel bad for the folks on the other side of the island who lost homes to the sea.

Hi everyone. I live in North Jersey and made it through Sandy's 80 mile an hour winds and rains. We never lost power or cell service but there are trees and power lines all around my town. I hope everyone in Sandy's path are ok.
Muddy, amazing pictures from Ohio......amazing also the extent and size of that storm.

The Power just came back a short while ago!! What an experience. I am extremely grateful that all I lost was a huge Spruce Pine tree that got uprooted in my backyard. (I'll post pics later). We are now in the market for a new tree. It was indeed scary, especially the loud howling of the wind on Monday night before we lost power. I will take all warnings more seriously in the future. No water damage to house, although lots of others in my town had terrible floods. I am so sorry for all the terrible losses others have experienced. It was really hard being without power for so long. The nights were the worst. I never slept so long in my life. I went to bed very early ~ cause how long can you sit in the chair listening to the radio (saying the same news over and over again, nothing 'new'?) We were lucky to have hot water amazingly. Hello all! Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. My family and I are fine - still no power. I am with my sister, 45 minutes north of us who now has power. We got a trickle of water in our back door and a lot of branches down in my yard so I am personally very thankful. The neighborhood I live in lost several large trees. I am less than 10 miles west of Seaside where they lost half the boardwalk. I have friends who have water in the basement, trees on their homes, lost their roof and some who have completely lost their homes along the shore. There are some areas hit worse than others. Thank you for your prayers for those who need it the most. There are those who really need them.

My heart goes out to all who suffered loss as a result of Sandy. Having been through a couple of big earthquakes I know how hard it is to explain to someone what the damage looks like to someone who didn't live through it.
Glad to hear that everyone has made it through the storm. Strange that a place just 10 miles from Seaside wasn't hit harder. Thank goodness for that. We still have lots of areas without power and trees are down everywhere. We got hit by a wind storm last Monday and Tuesday before Sandy got here. Our power was off for about 24 hours but there are areas here that haven't had power since late Monday. Muddy's pictures show what happened here and she's about 15 miles south of me.

I'm not sure the exact location of Owie but yes, she's in Md. Patty Louise posted yesterday on another thread. Guess she hasn't looked here. Toots posted on a thread too, so she is ok. Who is in WV? Hi...thanks for thinking of me and DH..we have power at my house. Only out for a day and half....but still worried for mom and sis on LI who still have no power and it's near freezing at night. Mom can call out but not receive incoming calls and has running water, but how many layers can you wear? Still she has a roof over her head, unlike others we've seen on the news. Now they are talking about a Nor'easter maybe bringing more winds and rain, even snow during the middle of the week? I also have friends in NJ and just on the other side of the Hudson River in NY who also have no power yet. T&P's for all still mired in this mess!

Hey All! We finally got power last night! We were so excited until an hour and a half later when the lights went out AGAIN!!! The newest storm left us with about 10 inches of very wet snow that brought down more trees onto power lines. It did more damage to my yard than Sandy. All 7 of my crepe myrtles are badly damaged. Staying with friends again. How did you folks make out after this latest disaster?
