Where to put the Fence Gate ? Sign In/Join

We are finally redoing our fence and will replace with the black vinyl chain link.

The current gate is next to the house and not convenient. So now to decide where to put it. My thoughts are to bring it out about 4' from the house. It will allow more foundation plantings and a small walk way on the side yard.

Or would you center the gate on the run? Installer says we can put it anywhere-no problem.

The hibiscus will be moved as needed and replanted for privacy. There will be additional plants added to fill in the side yard too. Just not sure of what to do right now.

I don't think I'd like the gate over towards the neighbor's side. Here are a few pics for you to see the area.

This blank section will have plants added later. It wraps around and connects to the front planter.

I put some green tape where it might work to put the new gate. So your thoughts on the gate location? As always, thanks!

There is a fairly good slope to the area also which might factor in.

I really like the idea of putting the gate where you have the green tape. This frees up planting space as you said. Is the fence/gate really for a dog? If so, consider your convenience in going in and out to tend to the dog. Where the gate is right now is ok, a nice walkway with pavers would add to the look...but I really like your idea of plantings on the side of the house.

The ideal situation would be to move the gate to where you put the green tape. However, the slope of the yard may not make that feasible, even though the installer said it could go anywhere. Sometimes, they're just trying to please. Good luck with the new project.

My 3 criteria of where to place gates are security, convenience, and esthetics. Under security I like to be able to see the gate from a convenient window. Convenience is self-explanatory and depends on how you use that area. Esthetics is also pretty obvious and while IMO the slope would make a difference if the installer is OK with it I guess it's not a problem. IMO esthetically it's in the best place now.

Do you really need a gate on that side of your house?

Thanks Vera,

Yes, that is the goal to add more plants and finish the area. It's squished to go through the gate right next to the house. Plus a walk way against the house didn't seem right either.

FFG, That slope will be a pain for sure. Hope the installers are patient with me. I'll post and let you know the final results. Thanks Too!

Lucky, Thanks for those considerations. We do need a gate on that side too for convenience.

An arbor with a gate would be pretty there. I love all your tropical trees.

I would center the gate on the fence. Your grass looks like it would feel good to bare feet Smile

Georgia,

Thanks too. I am starting to think we should see if it works centered. Look at these cute Fence Pots for a little decorating.

Good idea with the pots. With a black vinyl fence I'm also thinking maybe some red knockout roses.
