Does anyone know what insect, other then slugs nad snails, that will make holes and turn the leaves to lace?

This is happening to my marigolds, salvia and two of the clematis. I sprinkled snail and slug bate a few weeks ago but it's still happening. I have searched for insects and found NONE. Also, the clematis is on the other side of the yard then the salvia and marigolds.

Here's a picture of the clematis (yes, it also has a disease too). It looks awful.

Several Beetles can make holes in leaves as can Cutter Bees. The larva of many insects can also, but seldom will they leave until it is time to pupate. I would suspect that you still have slugs munching on those plants.

Thanks. That's what I suspected, especially since I just found some more damage to one of my hostas. I've seen leaf cutter damage before and this isn't it. I'll have to use some more of the bait pellets I have or result to the beer method.

Forensicmom, I've been using eggshells this year. Haven't been out to buy the slug stuff, & you have to reapply it after a rain anyway (not that we've had any rain...Roll Eyes. The eggshells work great.

FM, you could get a sack of oyster shell where chicken supplies are sold and put little rings of it around your plants. The slugs/snails won't cross it.
Or rinse out your egg shells & collect them, then put them in a bag & crush them & sprinkle them around...works the same.
Since you have family close...get all their egg shells too! Big Grin

question about the egg shells. Do you put them on top of the mulch? I would imagine it wouldn't look too nice in the beds.

Big Grin LOL Karen.

Forensicmom, I just put the crushed shells on top. You can hide them under the hosta leaves unless the hostas are touching the ground. I guess then the slugs could crawl right up the leaves. It's really working for me this year & I don't mind seeing the eggshells.
