We're headed to a book sale this weekend. It's conducted by the Friends of the SF Public Library, so it will be very large. I wondered if any of you might suggest a good gardening book (or 2) for me to buy. I'm interested in landscaping ideas, planting with shrubs, planting with color, etc. Not veggie gardening, as I am smack in the fog belt!
Sorry, I look on line for photos that I like for gardening ideas....I hardly ever read books any more....and the gardening advice comes from sites like this.

Hope you get some good books - library book sales are my nemesis and I have to be very careful! I've downsized on books and it's way too easy to find more. I can't recommend any as have given away all mine except for 4 Lois Hole books and 5 others and they are all about gardening in Canada. I only like gardening books with lots of pretty pics! I now take books out of the library and also get info online from many sources.

lucky you.. you get to go book shopping. sigh of envy. i don't do that anymore. i suggest you just go and have fun perusing the books available. i'll bet there will be some that will jump into your shopping basket. if you are anything like me and books.. you'll wind up having to go thru the painful process of deciding which ones to eliminate. need any help carrying your must-haves to the register? i'll volunteer.

In an hour, or so, we'll be leaving for lunch, then the book sale. I've made note of your suggestions. Thanks everyone. I'll post again, hopefully with the titles that I've bought.
The book sale was great - very well organized and huge. Lots of shoppers - I saw 2 friends there. The sale was held in a warehouse on the waterfront. They furnished us with grocery carts, and folks were loading up like crazy! We were given a map showing the location of materials (books, mags, CDs, etc.) by topics listed. Most topics were displayed on several tables and had additional inventory in boxes beneath the tables. Wow!
I headed for gardening and Bana, I handled 2 or 3 copies of your gardening bible - a terrific book, but daunting for me. I settled on a volume called "Gardening Essentials" published in 2011 by the National Home Gardening Club. It's slim - maybe 200 pages, has colored photos and sketches, and covers lawns, design, pests, flowers, and more. I could have spent the afternoon at that location, but I wanted to search some other topics, so I moved on to US then European history, philosphy (for DS) and caught up with DH.
I'm looking at our haul and it's comprised of 4 hardcovers and 6 paperbacks which made our bill total $12. What a deal!This message has been edited. Last edited by: Ricearoni,
Don't let those Reader's Digest books scare you! They are great treasures...especially if you find an older one. Take a year or so looking thru them & digesting some of the info. Bana's mention of Reader's Digest reminded me of one I have that I love..."Magic & Medicine of Plants". HUGE amount of information in it. How plants were used for different medical purposes through the ages & how toxic specific plants are. And I got mine at a yard sale...I think I paid $1...it was late in the day & they wanted to get rid of stuff. I got a whole stack of books for $20!...lots of subjects.

that sounds like a wonderful book, ga.karen. i'll have to 'amazon' it to see if it is still available. otherwise, if it is an older one, that gives me a great excuse to peruse used bookstores. like i need an excuse.
woo hoo.. i found it there by Reader's Digest for $14.99 new and as low as $.01 used. think i will order myself a used one in 'good condition'. thanks for that heads up!

I have the first one on your list...1986 by the editors of Reader's Digest. It is a tall narrow book. I've been through it at least twice so far and still look up certain plants in it when I have questions...especially if they might be toxic.
