last summer i met the man who lives behind me and has a beautiful garden, i was admiring his plants and talking about my plans for our new house and yard. well this spring i was out there digging up hostas i have planted all along one side of the garage. i planned to put them here and there and spread the joy so to speak. next thing i know John is handing me plants over the fence, he gave me at least 10 lilys, 8 or 10 iris', coneflower, black eyed susan, astilbe, a few more hostas, and more. i am so pleased to have John as my neighbor, we talk over the fence almost everyday. he teaches me things about the plants he gives me and i have almost completely filled in the bed im putting in around the perimeter of my yard. AM I LUCKY OR WHAT?? i love this man!!!

no wonder!..... that's the kind of neighbor that makes your neighborhood memorable!.... I had Mrs Robinson.... same deal... second house down, but what a gardener!.... she brought a welcome wagon when we started our gardens... yep, really... a little red wagon with a load of plants!... I got yucca, spiderwort, the Japanese snowball, sedum that survived me, and a few that didn't!... my first blackeyed susan and coneflower and a blackberry!!.... she taught me about the best tool in the garden, too...

you keep your ears open when around that fella!.. you'll learn so much!!... he'll know soil hints and what NOT to plant, too!..LUCKY, LUCKY YOU!!!

I bet that neighbor feels really lucky to have a neighbor who likes plants and gardening like him or her. I would be thrilled. to talk 'plants and garden' over the fence when we see each other.

That is when one sees neighbors too at least for me when out and about in the garden. It leads to seeing the others garden too. WinkThats always nice.

it IS nice, i love the "talking over the fence" thing. just yesterday after i posted this thread, i was out there sitting on my patio and low and behold, there at the back of the fence was a present from John! some more ferns! if i'm not outside, he just leaves them there for me. i think my dad in heaven sent him to me, my dad is the one who got me so interested in gardening. i;m trying to think of something nice to do for John. i did give him a pack of morning glory seeds a while ago but i really want to do something special for him, any ideas?

oh toots, i just got a look at your link. your gardens are breathtaking! i can only dream of my yard being so lush. that is my goal, LUSHNESS! LOL. i especially liked the park like setting in the back with the path. i just got started, we put in flower bed edging this past weekend, and John is helping me fill it in. i hope one day to have mine as pretty as yours.

Wendy is John married? Big Grin Just kiddin'. I'd love to have a neighbor that even attempts to do anything to their yard. The ones on either side of me mow their grass - that's it. And one of those waits until it's a foot high. Weed control? What is that? You are a lucky woman to have such a great neighbor. Toots you've piqued in interest - again. Smile What's the best tool in the garden?

Wow that is great!! I have shared some plants with my neighbor and she says she may have some black eyes susan's for me this year. It is great when you have some really good neighbors.

Sorry I missed this. I have been working some really long days this week.

sooner, yes he's married but i hardly ever see her outside, gardening is his thing. he's in his 60's and i have a husband or else he and i would be very happy together dont you think? Smilelol. on nice days he spends all day out there, he's always busy doing something. guess what? last night he left another present for me by the fence. i dont know what it is yet, looks like cut off daffodils with bulbs at the root. i should just plant it and be surprised! i'll be out there today putting it in. i went to walmart yesterday and got some plants. i make my kids give me cash for mothers day so i can pick out what i want. lol i got some geraniums, some lambs ear, some petunias, another salvia, and a large plant for the patio. was grinning all the way home! What a wonderful neighbor! I love lambs ear. Mine came back for several years and they are so soft. It sounds like your garden is coming along beautifully Wendy.Yesterday I met a wonderful lady who wants to trade. There may be a garden trade also going on in your area where you can get lots of great varieties. They usually take place this time of year. Have fun!

sorry... forgot to tell ya about the tool.... this is it...a pick mattock!!...

    http://www.smithandspeed.com/catalog/item/4388381/4580576.htm

it don't look like something you'd carry around on your tool belt, I know, but mine hangs where I can lay hands on it quick....this thing busts thru hard clay like it'snothing... it grubs out bermuda grass roots in a flash.... it digs me a hole to plant in.... it drags soil back into the hole.... it edges along the sidewalk in a pinch.... it cultivates like a hoe in tight spots....like my neighbor did for me, dividing a plant with it is super easy.... just chop out a clump!!... it's worth it's small price, and it's easy to handle for those of us who are losing arm and hand strength..... I can't do without mine....
