How are you supposed to wash lettuce and keep it from getting soggy?

I cut a bunch of leaves from my buttercress lettuce and washed them. I then dried them with paper towels to use in a salad. The lettuce leaves were soggy.

I've never grown lettuce before, so what did I do wrong?

I always use a lettuce spinner -- I think you can get them at Wal Mart -- they're wonderful for lettuces!

Pick lettuce in the cool of the morning before it heats up. Rinse quickly under running water, either spin or drain, then wrap in paper towels and place in plastic bag in the frig.

Some lettuces are not as crisp as others and buttercress may be one of those. The name tells me it's likely. One of the common ones served in Europe was a soft type that is never crisp.
