LOLing, I love these captions!!! It's apple halves smeared with peanut butter, then smashed into some bird seed. He did end up eating most of it...ran some of the smaller birds off if they were there when he flew up. I just loved the look on his face when he first flew up to the feeder (which BTW, is simply a coffee can lid screwed into the top of my rose trellis). Great spot for close up bird pictures.

Thanks again.

Wavy, looks like a Red Headed Woodpecker.

Vera, you lucky duck!! I've never seen one of those here at my house. We see them inland in the forest sometimes. That head is just gorgeous.

FFG is correct - it is a redheaded woodpecker. They are common backyard visitors here. I've found that they prefer an open place to feed, like the can lid...it seems that the little ledges on the other feeders aren't big enough for them. I think they are simply beautiful birds, and we love to listen to them "talking" to each other.

Not sure if it's a male or a female.....I say "he". Both sexes look alike, so when they are talking back and forth, we figure it's a him and a her. Big Grin

BTW - Bana came closer to my thoughts on a caption than anyone. I've been trying to get a good shot of him forever........I'd be on the deck with camera poised when he'd fly up, he'd see me and fly away again. Finally, he lit again and looked right at me......so my first thought was "There she is with that camera again. Might as well pose and get it over with".

Here's another shot just before he flew off with a seed. They have beautiful coloring.
