I know this doesn't sound like rocket science but I have a nice sized rain guage that has a flat float. When it rains the float floats to the top of the water level. Do I read the amount at the bottom of the float or the top? The float is blue and a good1/4 to 1/2" thick. ~Jean~ in garden zone 6b

You read the float at the bottom. That's the level of water in the gauge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I've decided to quit my job, drop out of society, and wear live animals as hats."

Ok, that's what I thought but then I wondered what the point of the float was if I could just read the level of the water under the float. Either I'm overthinking this or underthinking it. Thanks for your answer! ~Jean~ in garden zone 6b

...which was completely lost on me because I didn't even know it had a float when I bought it. Anyway, I'm glad that urgent problem has been solved! Thanks again! ~Jean~ in garden zone 6b

It may be that my rain guage is getting old, like me, but the last time I emptyed it the water level was at the top of the float. The sign of a good gardener is not a green thumb, it is brown knees.
