Think these pineapple lily bulbs are duds... growing so slow??? I was so excited to have these & never grew any before...but they have looked like this so long already! ~~~Maybe need hotter weather?
Oh nice Muddy. I see a seed pod from columbine with the service berry. Do Holly Hock's bloom the first yr? I threw seeds last yr. and see some coming up. One is really big but no flowers. I know nothing about them tho. that caladium is beautiful.

Love your caladiums, Muddy! Mine are just now coming up, too. I have 2 leaves up from about 15 bulbs planted. It's amazing how long it takes for the soil to warm up for those beauties to come out to play!! A gardening friend of mine says to never plant caladium bulbs before the first of June, or they might rot in the ground before it warms up enough for them to come up. (I never listen, though! )
Your other lovelies look great too! Always loved the fuschia, but never bought one. Do you buy them anew each year or overwinter them inside? I don't do well at that, even with "simple" things, so I don't even try any more. Enjoyed your pics!!

Yep...Just about time to collect columbine seeds here. Those were from my parent's yard so have to be sure I always have some. HH's will bloom late for me if started from seed in early Spring. (very simple to grow from seed) I am having a problem with that rust tho so hate to share those & maybe transmit a disease?
My friend managed to keep a fuschia in her garage thru the winter once here but my garage is not heated & basement to warm...so can't~~~ but not for lack of trying! This one was $4.99!! I hang on tree branches in the shade of the tree & keep watered...sometimes it works out very well that way...just depends on the summer.
Muddy, Love the pics. Really like the HH but I have a question about rust. It's the number one disease that harms daylilies in the south and it's the reason that I resisted buying from down there until last year. Guess it can't live over winter up here. Is it possible for the rust to transfer from the HH to the daylilies? Just went to gardenweb and the consensus is that it doesn't transfer from the HH to the daylilies because it is a rust that is specific to the HH. Hope that makes sense. Whew!
Just had a fuschia hanging basket fry here at the office last weekend. I have never had to water every day until July! I didn't get here to water on Saturday and by Sunday it was fried, don't you just love the high temps?
Don't know if I can going to replace some annuals that have died in the heat. It's only mid-June this is not supposed to happen here. Looks like we are headed into the upper 80's this weekend here and so the watering will continue on a daily basis, not only the containers but the beds too!This message has been edited. Good question about the rust? Not sure myself. The thought did cross my mind also!
DH hates to see me out there with the hose on! I can't help myself...You put in all this work & then what...Just let those little bloomers burn up in the sun? I have a great deal of shade so that does help but my patio pots are bone dry & water them twice a day sometimes lately!
can someone over-use the word 'beautiful'? if no, those leaves really are. love them! its so much fun touring the country in y'alls gardens thru this site. makes me feel kind of inadequate.. then i remind myself all this beauty is not found in one garden, but in many.

Don't you just love caladiums! Mine are slowly unfolding too. I saved my bulbs over the winter and planted them early, started them in the house, then moved outside. I think our weather has just been too weird.
Regarding the question on HHs. I am surprised that you got blooms the first season. Normally the HHs will grow the first year and bloom the second year...bi-annual, like foxgloves. Rust is a real problem here so I don't have them anymore. Love 'em...they are indeed an old fashioned cottage garden plant.
your other bloomers are pretty - congrats on the first lily bloom. Need to check my service berry - haven't noticed any redding of the leaves yet!

today at Lowe's they marked ALL the caladiums down to 2.00.....since the DH was with me...I could "only" (((wink))) get two. but I am going back!!! I got "pink passion" and "carolyn whorten"
