Bought one a few years ago (the compactus) and the other day a friend of mine gave me hers. Now I did a little research and am finding not only these shrubs get huge but are considered invasive.

Anyone else here have a burning bush that can tell me about their experiences with it?

I believe burning bush can be invasive in the warmer climes, but not so much where the winters keep them in check.

gelato, I have three, in different locations in my yard. One I have had at least 7 years and it hasn't been an issue at all, another for about 5 years, no problems. The other was given to me two years ago, it hasn't been a problem either. In fact I'm wishing they would all get larger, wonder why mine are so different than the ones you have?

If you scan down the page on this site, you'll see which states consider it officially invasive and which ones are concerned about it. I don't see your state in either of the weed status places so I think you should be okay.

My DP's have one (and a couple of offspring in the edge of the woods) and they are beautiful in the fall. I don't know if theirs is a naturally compact one or if they cut it back each year but it's about 4 feet tall. It was very small when they planted it years ago.

Gelato, I have 4 of them in my back yard. They can get big over time but not at all invasive. They have a beautiful red color in the Fall.

Gelato...I have one and it would be invasive if I did not prune it. It was a freebie before I knew what it was. It is gorgeous...I just have to keep my eye on it here in my zone.

I LOVE mine! I think I have 6 altogether and they're beauties...the color in Fall is amazing!!! The bushes I have in the front yard have to be well over 10 years old and I see nothing invasive about them...and no slugs that I've ever noticed.

Have to add...I have sooooo many plants in my yard that some consider invasive. But honestly, not a single thing has ever gotten out of control...nor are they taking over the neighboring yards!!
