Hello. I have 24 inch rectangular flower boxes and am planting impatiens. I'm not sure how many plants (the garden store called them "cells") I should put in each one. They are hanging on a railing, so I can't go too crazy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I use the 'cells' of six packs..... I put one in each front corner, then one in the middle... then between and behind I center up two more.... that will totally fill the box.... be sure to feed 'em so they fill out and bloom nicely....now, if you want to put anything else in there with them, you can adjust accordingly...these have been in about two weeks.........

Midnight, sometimes the garden centres try to put too many in a flat. A flat might contain 24 plants....the guys who try to sell more by selecting smaller plants...will put 36--maybe even 48 plants into the flat. Much smaller, they take longer to come to anything but, crowd them and they spoil the look entirely.
Why not allow two inches between the plants and place them as Old Glory exhibits the stars...staggered. This allows each to fill in the space up/down/sideways. In the centre you place a rock of size...and when they begin to grow and expand they will climb that rock and give you a mounded look. The size of the individual will decide how much they mound.
Just make sure your containers drain well and if the box sits too much level to the ground, drainage may be compromised so raise it slightly by placement of a brick or two underneath.
Toots shows 5 plants or cells in each box. Some garden centers have 4cell packs, some 6 , and as Hayland mentions...sometimes there are 2 to a "cell" as Home Depot often packs them, but the plants may be smaller. Most garden shows cram as much into a widowbox as they can for a "full" look, but then they outgrow the box and need constant watering because they get rootbound. And that costs a lot more to use so many plants. Unless you need that instantly-ready full look, leave them some space! Hey Toots, what are those red things in with the impatiens? They look like baby red maple trees!
