Snakes are really beneficial in your garden and in reality are really more afraid of you than you are of them. Give them some warning and they will leave your garden before you even get there. Other then that you will need to change the environment of your garden to be unfriendly to snakes. No cool, moist areas for them to shelter in, pretty much an environment that would also be very hostile to yuour plants.

I live in NC, too... central.... my garden is a haven for snakes... we get along fine.... I carry my cane with me when I go out and I use it to 'rattle the bushes' and thump the soil in the area I plan to be working in....setting up a 'human vibration' tells them I'm heading their way and gives them time to skeedaddle.....so, walk heavy and carry a big stick!!.... don't let fear of running into one keep you out of your garden!!!.... that old business about how 'they're more afraid of you than you are of them', is true....as long as you don't surprise them, they won't surprise YOU!!!....

Don't forget that they are likely keeping other things away from your house...like mice!

I have not seen any in my gardens but did ki ll a copperhead slithering down my driveway one afternoon. The a/c man found a dead on in the air conditioner. I am not fond of them either. I kil led the copperhead because I have a small child and did not want harm to come to him.

I see snakes almost everyday. If you have lizards or frogs you're going to have snakes. They always slither away fast when they see me. The only ones I kill are the coral snakes. I don't want to accidently step on one. They tend to stay put and hide instead of running away.
