I'm going to plant my Sweet Autum Clem. in one of these flower beds but can't decide wich side to put it in.
the left side has a clem in it growing up that white trellis. Will the SAC crowd it out?
On the right side there is a pine tree that I don't care if it grew up in it. Also 2 mini roses in this bed.
I'm trying to use the SAC to help shade to deck .
Thanks for any suggestions!!

#3 right side The deck faces south so gets a lot of sun.
As you can see it gets morning shade. I took these pics about 11am.

i think it would be pretty on the trellis side to offset the tallness of the pine tree. i am no expert but think the two clems would get along just fine.

I have 2 other clems on the same trellis with my sac. They are much smaller but they have still bloomed every year. But the sac will get larger & larger year after year.
Maybe we can get Toots to post a pic of hers...if she reads this. Hers is huge!

We had a SAC at our last house and that thing was a monster! I don't want to be a downer, but I don't believe your current trellis will support one. You may be better off planting it on the right where it can go up the pine if you don't mind that. We had one on our pergola and one trained to grow over the shed. It was always hard pruned, so what you see below is the result of one season's growth! Eek

Another view, it extended over the shed onto the pergola, all same, single plant

You can see the poor trellis buried underneath the growth at the ground level (the one I thought would support it). I never thought it would engulf the shed!

Shook, yours might be bigger that Toot's! Big Grin
Mine isn't near that big but then we are a lot hotter for longer than most of you northern gals.

A friend is building me a sturdy trellis from metal so it will be ok.
I'm going to plant it with the othe clem then. I like the look of it going over your shed. I hope it will go over the porch like that.
I've noticed that it's a lot fuller at the top. Can you keep it trimmed to flower lower too or does it only flower on the new growth?
Thanks a lot everyone.

That is huge, isn't it?

If you hard prune it every spring, how do you get all the old dead growth off...with a ladder?

That must be some job!

If silly bird plants it with another clem, won't it choke that one out? Maybe the other clem needs a safe spot so this SAC can have it's way on the metal trellis!

mine blooms along about Sept.... as soon as the bloom is done, I cut mine off the trellis... no seed-forming going on there!!.... and it's never complained about it.... right back up in spring!!!....that is when we are painting around the porch , if it is needed, too... it's gotta GO!!!...

Mine has tried to get into a tree close to it's trellis & I just cut that piece back no matter what time of year. Otherwise, I wait until it goes brown and yank the dead stuff off. Just be careful doing it that way...some of it isn't REALLY dead!

Thanks everyone I changed my mind. You all helped and I put it on the side by the tree.
I'm glad to read it's so hardy and can be cut back any time. Thanks again
