A while back, I was reading here about some of you growing clematis up the downspouts of your house. I'd like to do that & have been searching here to find that discussion, but haven't been able to find it.

What I'm looking for is, what do you use to make it able to climb? I just can't remember. I was thinking twine or string, but I also keep thinking it was some sort of mesh. What works best and how is this attached to the downspout to make it sturdy enough?

Thanks for any info.

Janie

well.....being I don't know the area you are in.
here in Illinois, I use regular trellis.
if we used yarn or mesh, the winter would trash it.
if you live in the south, you have more options...
a clematis will grow up anything..you just have to give it something to twine on....watch what variety you use also...those sweet autumn's will pull the down spout off!
where's jeannie? she is the clematis queen!!

I'm also in IL, but northern IL. Does the vine die back every year, so it wouldn't matter if the twine was in bad shape every year - I could just put up some new ones?

I also wondered about weight, because a friend of mine attached a trellis to the side of their house & when it's covered in the summer, it actually pulls the siding away from their house!

I was just planning to use one plant per downspout. Would one vine be enough to pull down a downspout? We don't have vinyl siding, just wood clapboard. What if I attached twine or mesh to a hook put into the clapboard close to the downspout?

Thanks,
Janie

clematis do die back. BUT

there are different classes of clems.
some bloom on the old wood.
some bloom on new and old wood.
some bloom on only new wood
most of mine....
are the third bunch...these are the ones that you prune back about february (here in illinois) to about 1 1/2 feet tall. these could grow up anything.
jackmanii,warsaw nike belong here.
the first two...the trellis just is support...
the stem has to make it through the winter for the spring blooms.

jeannie got me going with clematis....
now I have eleven, and two more to be planted.

Janie..I've been looking at this Downspout Trellis to buy from Lee's Garden...there is also InvisiClimb .
I would NEVER suggest a Sweet Autumn clematis as they are too HUGE and could do damage to your home..Regular Clematis would be great..they'd enjoy that moist area as long as it doesn't stand with water for days on end...Jeanne

JEANNE wouldn't the clematis need something wider than the 8" around the downspout?
