hi karen... for some reason, your picture came out so huge i have to scroll and scroll in both directions to see it all. i must have done something weird. mine are normal size.

when i opened 'why i like iris', wavies first picture was the same kind of huge. hummmm....

anyway, i got 3 more hosta plants to put behind the maple tree to fill in along the fence. they are smaller than the other 3 i planted so should not get too large too soon. i went for the same variety to have a mass planting mono look.

Bana, Edith is one gorgeous iris...and I thought I liked her best..but then I looked at Blue Suede Shoes again..and maybe not! She certainly is a profilic bloomer anyway.

Except for a couple of rebloomers that have buds again, my iris are history. Here's a shot taken last month during the peak bloom period.

PS - just got a notice that my picture is too large, so had to resize it.......so how on earth did Karen get away with that great big hosta picture? She must know someone in management ;o)

i can hardly wait till my iris are clumps like yours. but i will be patient and enjoy the surprise of what blooms come out this first year.

so you saw the huge hosta too? i thought i did something goofy with the cpu to cause it to happen. whew. i think it maybe has something to do with the weird way we couldn't open GG this morning because another thread also has a huge picture.. and it was normal yesterday.

Hi Guys! Trying to get the problem fixed. That was my avatar that was so HUGE, and I have NO idea why. Let's see if this is better!

No, I don't know anyone in management...I think it's a glitch in the site. Wink

Hi Kris - thank you. The dark ones are old fashioned bearded and they came from the garden of a friends mother, long since passed. I have had them for years. He simply called them Black Iris, so that's what I call them. They are a deep deep purple. If you catch the light just right on them, they do indeed appear to be black.

Wow those are beautiful! I love the blue one the most. I've got a bunch, and I don't know the variety, but they haven't bloomed yet. I do know that they are spreading fast and furious!

Vera - I just love your Blue Suede Shoes Iris! Gorgeous! Blue flowers are so rare.
Your other Irises are lovely too. Do they rebloom or is that it after their first blooms in springtime??
If they don't rebloom, then what happens? Do you replant something else for summer to replace dead Irises??? (I need those Emoticons!)
A neighbor has tulips and after they bloom once in spring, she has something different there now. Don't know what it is, but it is very pretty, large flowers. Gotta ask her what they are.

Wavie sweetie, that is Bana's blue suede shoe iris, and I wish it were mine ;o)...and ditto, it is gorgeous.

Yes, there are other plantings in that bed. Some of the iris are rebloomers, most are standard bearded and siberians. Right now dasies and daylilies are blooming and the alliums (the pesky invasive small kind) are in bud. There are also coneflowers and BES that will pick up and most will bloom until frost.

Muddy, I think your iris is a dutch iris.

i'm in my 70's and can you believe i've never made ice cream. have you? it seems so darned complicated to me. tell you what, lets meet in Santa Cruz and get the real deal.

here's the Yelp link to Mariannes with lots of pictures. http://www.yelp.com/biz/marian...ice-cream-santa-cruz

btw, Santa Cruz is 1 3/4 hours south of San Francisco via Hwy 1 on the beautiful scenic coast route.

Everyone's irises are so lovely!

I only have one photo because you know what happened to all of my iris this year. For those that don't, my 8 year old chopped off all the buds. Those are pink and yellow and were passed along to me.
