I just read in Southern Living that if you have not planted tulips bulbs yet, that you might as well throw them away since they need at least 8 weeks of cold weather to be viable. I have quite a few and hate the thought of wasting them. Any thoughts on this?

I'd plant them anyway... if they grow, cool. If not, well you haven't lost anymore than you will by putting them in the trash!

The key to a nice-looking lawn is a good mower. I recommend one who is muscular and shirtless.

Guess my tulips I planted back the last of November won't do any good, cause it doesn't look like we are ever gonna have any cold weather.

Hummmm....do they still look good Rose? Firm? How bout the refrigerator thing? I'd plant them too and chance it before I'd toss them but maybe you could give them the false chill in the fridge? It's what I was going to do with my specialty tulips anyway that I paid a pretty penny for and never go them dug up cause I didn't mark them. I know the general area they are planted in but have other bulbs that are not tulips there as well and would prob. dig up the wrong thing. Maybe give the fridge idea a chance?

I forgot about the fridge thing! Good call Robin Smile Just be sure to mark them "tulips"... I'd end up frying them up and serving them for sure... Eek Razz

When you "dom the fridge thing" do you plant them in a pot and put them on the bottom shelf or do you toss a bag of bulbs in a crisper drawer and then plant them later? Just wondering because I saw some on clearance at a local garden center and thought they might be great to have a big pot of them on the [atio, but don't have room for a big pot in the fridge.

That depends on where you are, and this does illustrate one of the problems with region oriented magazines sold nationally, bad advice gets thrown around far and wide.
If you do have bulbs not yet planted they can be or the could be chilled first and then potted up, or the could be chilled first and planted, but never, ever throw good plants away simply because someone thinks you do not have the time and energy needed to grow them.

The sign of a good gardener is not a green thumb, it is brown knees.
