A large branch right outside the upstairs window on the tulip tree is totally without tree bark! We have contemplated cutting that tree down so not really all that mad but still... I stopped buying peanuts & putting out peanut butter on stale bread! LOL
I can't imagine a squirrel chewing off the entire bark but you have his picture so I guess he is guilty. We only had some bark gone from a large tree years ago. That's a hungry squirrel population down there for sure!

When we decided to feed the squirrels less we did it gradually not abruptly. Is there any food source available now where you live? Also, we knew that we helped increase the population size and the squirrels needed time to adjust because they had become dependent on us.

DH keeps making owl boxes & the squirrels always move in! LOL!
That's funny, the squirrels are taking over the homes intended for the predators. The squirrels think your husband built the owl houses for them, not the birds. Besides you know squirrels prefer the residences in the better neighborhoods like yours.
Our squirrels help with yard clean up and scold us if we let the yard get to messy. Now if I could just get to stop burying the walnuts and Brazil nuts one of our neighbors feed them in my yard backyard. Heaven only knows what they have stashed in the bushes because the squirrels seem to think they are squirrel kitchen cupboards.
