We haven't had a hard freeze yet, but it did get down to 30 last week. My Angel Trumpets are looking sad....the freeze killed the top leaves but the flowers just don't want to give up...hehe
The Kalanchoe are just starting to bloom
Here they are with the Ti plant..I have to take cuttings before it freezes too.
I like the colors on this Coleus I bought as filler for the parties.

oh my gosh Z9 - I love that arbor. I want to come walk down it and oooh and ahhh over all your beautiful plants. Back when I had angel trumpets, they would have been down to the ground by now....and so would everything else. Loved this post!!! Thank you.
Zone9lady, love that full shot of the back area of your home! Will your kalanchoes have to be brought in? My Angel Trumpet has lost all of its leaves. Bananna leaves are done in, I cut down all of my cannas to the ground. I have that fig ivy as well and it looks great. I think I'll go get some more for other fence areas.

Oh sooo pretty. I envy you the warmer weather. Only thing I have blooming is my purple sweet potato vine (cut back and brought in the house) and 1 little flower on the trailing african violet. I'd love to walk around your home. Beautiful! TFS

The Kalanchoe should be brought in but I'm just going to leave those heavy pots where they are at. They were started last April from cuttings from the mother plant, which is in a lighter fiberglass urn so I can bring it in. Six 2" cuttings per pot.....they filled in nicely!
Sillybird...I want to get some of that dark purple and bright lime SW Vine and mix them together.
Vera...you have to come around May, everything looks a whole lot better! hehe SSTR my small bananas are frost damaged too. If they don't freeze solid then they can get bigger next year.
Owie...I want more coleus...but I think the squirrels like them too. This message has been edited. Last edited by: zone9alady,

Yes, they grow back up here. Our ground doesn't freeze but those heavy frosts we get will do them in. My biggest had about 60 blooms on it when the first frost hit! I also tried to take cuttings twice this fall before frost & all of them just rotted...and I changed the water every other day like I had before. They are slow to show up in the spring though. First yr. I had them in the ground one didn't come up when the others did, so I thought it was dead. Was digging it up to replace it & the root was about 12" long...it wasn't dead, just slow. I replanted it along with some alfalfa pellets...started leafing in a few days!

Karen, Last winter I took cuttings about 12 to 14 inches long and stuck them in a 6" pot of good draining potting mix with lots of peat and perlite (I did use rooting hormone) and kept them slightly moist in the garage. All of them took and are now even flowering the first year. I found a neat tip on another garden board. Take a cutting where it branches in a "Y" shape and you will get blooms the first season. It works. It was funny to see such a small plant with huge flowers on it.

zone9, good tip on taking a branch cutting since they won't bloom until they branch. I've always just stuck them in a vase of water until they get the little white bumps on them and then I pot them. This year it just didn't work. But I have 4 already & one gets HUGE! It is about 5-6' tall & 8-10' wide. It is on the east side of our well house and does get a bit of shade from some pine trees at various times during the day.

It's warming up all over. Just enough to trick my plants into sprouting. Then, poor things they will freeze next month. That's what happened to my Seville Oranges last year. All the flower buds froze....got two oranges this year!

Us too! It was at least 75º this afternoon and supposed to be warmer tomorrow, Fri. & might hit 80º on Sat. It is 7:53pm and 65º right now. Then mid to late next week a cool down with lows down into the 20's again late in the week.
I have an iris bud that opened. My golden honeysuckle has several blooms. I saw some new leaves on one of my hydrangeas. Yep, all gonna get frozen!
