Thank you Fluffy!

Thank you SSTR! I cut my knockouts to about 15" every spring.

The privets are actually shrubs but these are about 75 years old & were never pruned. They were here when we moved in & I placed our gazebo in between them. I have a love/hate relationship with them. As you can see in the picture they have fragrant white blooms in the spring. It's magical! But then the blooms turn into little blue fruit that germinates. I am ALWAYS pulling up baby privets!

Oh my, oh my!!! Patty, I discovered there is a 2nd page to this thread and saw your full size privets. Gorgeous! And your seating area - neat!! Now I'm going to have to dig up my picture of privets that we planted at our place up in Kansas. Had no idea they would grow so tall! Your tree's height is fine where it is located, but ours are adjacent to a public alley way. We have 5 of them planted around the curve of the planter. We don't have tht catalpa tree on the left there any more.

I love the pink & purple together! And your walkway is great. I may steal that idea. I love catalpas. We had one but a hurricane blew it over. When my grandpa was a teen he said they used to smoke the fruit - called them monkey cigars! LOL!

Do your privets flower & drop fruit?

Cool birdchurch post!

Wow, I planted about 12 privets in the back of the house. I don't think I'll live long enough to see them get that big and beautiful, but they do grow about 2 feet a year! It always seems that when mine bloom, it's the same time those darn Love Bugs appear, and they LOVE the scent of the blooms.
So I have variegated privet with white flowers covered in black and orange bugs! Roll Eyes

Silly bird, yep, April is about the last month for cool weather around here. After that I wait till October to tend garden again.

Those privets are amazing! I'd love for mine that big! Are those the variegated type or are they the ones that are called Ligustrum?

I'm not sure what kind they are as they were here when we moved in. I will ask my greenhouse buddy if he knows.

I sure wish that mine didn't fruit. I have 2" privets so thick that it looks like ground cover. I have been chopping them with the weed eater.

I've seen pics of the love bugs - they are so cute - glad I don't have them tho.
