to start gardening and it's only January!

I'm already planning in my head what I want to do this spring and looking at lots of gardening websites. I will need some help from all of you since DH and I want to redo the foundation plantings in the front of my house. Part shade/part sun (currently humungous Rhododendrons there).

Any ideas???

Do you like hydrangeas? They like the east side of the house. How does that part of your house face? Are you thinking trees? Flowers? Shrubs?

I'm in Massachusetts and yes I do love hydrangeas, BUT not in the winter. Even though the front of my house faces south/southeast there's a lot of trees in front of that and beyond the lawn and house that cause a lot of shade during the hottest time of the day. All hickory's too. I'd love to cut them down but DH won't have any of that.

See how under the porch is much different from the other side where the Rhodies are? I'd like to both sides so they're consistent.

I satisfied my gardening urges by starting 3 carrot tops in water and just last week the bottom of the celery stalk. Carrot tops are 12" high and the celery stalk sprouted a couple of days ago.. Its that spring green.. so nice to see

Have you thought about using holly near the house, and in front of holly if the bed is wide enough, azeleas? Both do fine in partial sun.

I see your house now, you have excellent place for both the holly and azeleas.

How is it possible that I'm ALREADY thinking about spring gardening?

Winter just started, Spring is MONTHS away. AND I don't have any place left to put anything new anyway!

But QVC did a couple Roberta's Gardening Show hours, and that brought out ed my latent gardener's virus OMG they showed some GORGEOUS delphiniums! I don't know what I'm going to do when the weather REALLY starts to get warm....

Well, I couldn't help it.
QVC recently had a all-day gardening event.

I bought a:
-- 4-plant Hardy Perennial Snapdragon Collection (perennial)
-- 3-pc. South African Succulent Hardy Ice Plant collection (perennial)
-- 8-pc. Live Forever Sempervivum Hens and Chicks Collection (perennial)
-- 10-pc Sunshine Punch SunPatiens Collection (annual)

(That's the thing about ordering from there. You always have to get so many plants. I wish they sold plants individually. These will be for me, my mom AND my sister-in-law!)

AND I'm going to the Philadelphia Flower Show next week!

I don't think I'll ever mail order plants again. Last year I ordered five gorgeous coneflowers, all different bright colors. They were in 2 inch pots and nearly croaked by the time I got them. As far as I could see, they disappeared in the ground.

I'm hoping they will show up this year.

It depends on where you order them from, WWanda. I order mine from Bluestone Perennials & have never had a problem. They ship when it's time to plant...not early & not late. I really like them.

Except that Bluestone doesn't know when to ship to the south....they nearly fried some stuff I bought from them so no more for me.
I have, however, had wonderful service and beautiful plants from Territorial Seeds and they are clear out in Oregon...shipping to SW Ga.
