Should I get them? What is your experience if you have them? I haven't completely decided to get them, but my nails split vertically & are a mess.

SSTR, i agree with JasminesMom. I speak from experience.
A good dermatologist should be able to tell you what will help your nails to keep them from splitting vertically. Mine did that too and I thought fake nails was the answer. It works great for about 3 years, but my thumb nail on my left hand, now has a misshapen nail that still splits vertically and is a bigger mess.
In this case, I would consult a dermatologist and not a manicurist.

Yep, good advice already given. I personally detest fake nails on me. They feel like there a big clod of dirt on the ends of them. My nails stay nice and short, and I try to wear appropriate gloves for whatever gardening work I'm doing.

Last time I got a manicure though, I had her do the gel polish. It stayed on perfectly for the whole time. Downside is that it has to be taken off by the tech, so that's another visit. Okay if you're re-doing the nails, but I wasn't. And, it costs more than the regular polish.

That won't help with the splitting nails, though.

Have you tried nail wraps to strengthen your nails. You place the nail wraps on your own nails. You can apply the wraps yourself; you don't need a manicurist to do it for you. I have nails that are thin and tear easily. I used the nail wrap paper when I used to polish my nails. My BFF used to wear the fake nails and had to stop because she got an infection even though she went to a good salon.

Here is an old picture of me with the nail wraps and polish. They held up to gardening.

The picture quality isn't very good, sorry.

Still trying what a lovey family you 3 are! Great picture!

In the summer I cut them once a week & no polish. I do get the white tips in the winter or if I have to dress up for some strange reason. Wink

SSTR, I discovered after years & years of fighting my nails splitting in layers...it was the nail polish that was doing it.
As soon as my nails grew out past where any polish had been, they were fine. I still can't wear polish or even the press on fake nails...it affects my nails & I'm left with ridges that will be there until they grow out.
Mine also stay fairly short...long ones get in my way!

SSTR, use hand cream or hand lotion after you wash your hands and rub it into your nails and cuticles. Water will dry out your nails and cause them to split.

I'm not sure if split nails and nails that crack vertically are the same thing. Regardless either are a pain in the you know what!

SSTR, no they aren't the same. But I just wanted you to realize that sometimes the things that are "supposed" to help don't & can make a problem worse. So don't discount anything as the cause of the problem until you isolate each one. It could even have to do with your diet.

AS ga.karen already stated they aren't the same. Here is a link to that will help you determine what type of nails you have.

There is a slideshow on WebMd with possible medical conditions that cause nail problems. Although I thing the picture of cracked or split nails is bit extreme. http://www.webmd.com/skin-prob...how-nails-and-health

This link has helpful information. http://www.livestrong.com/arti...prevent-split-nails/

Still trying, I checked out the links you posted. Some time back my dermotologist suggested I take Biotin supplement. I did for a while but didn't see improvement. In that last link you posted it said sometimes it takes 6 months before noticing results. I should have kept with it!
