I saw this in the Ladies Home Journal. I haven't seen this before but it sounds like a good and cheap way to vertical garden!
Has anyone here tried it? Are pallets good wood for planting...as in no chemicals?
jvelo - I've seen this in DIY's before. My problem with it would be the weight. A pallet is heavy by itself. Have you ever seen/handled one? You add all that potting soil plus plants and you are talking 65 to 75 lbs. I think it would work well if a person could handle it. You'd have to sorta do it in place, then stand it up where you want it to be, unless you have a pretty hefty lawn boy to help.
Most pallets (here) are made of oak or hickoy, a heavy wood because of the weight they have to support...it's usually rough sawn lumber, and as a rule, no chemical treatments. The video in the link showed nice, sanded wood and it looked lightweight.
Just my opinion, for what it's worth

I've seen both clean and nice looking ones and some really black and ugly ones. I guess they got there on a day when the pallets were new and not used over and over.
I forgot how heavy they are, but I did wonder about all that potting soil.
bump to first page
Was watching Growing a Greener World online...
more on this vertical gardening...an actual demonstration used to plant veggies! In tons more detail than the LHJ article.
Very interesting! I'll have to try this, although I may not get to it this year.
It starts about 14 minutes into this program. You can jump ahead by moving your pointer, or just watch the whole program
I saw something similar to that on HD's TV ad and was wondering how you could water it so the plants would get enough water. It is a beautiful concept but a lot of problem points have been brought up here. But we can dream even if it is not for us.
great idea.. the wheels are turning here.
i could set up two or three and prop them against the back, south facing wall.
put them up on a bench or blocks for easier harvesting..
hummmm, what a great strawberry crop i could have for so little space.
